My 'daily driver' is a 2019 WRX. I debated whether to buy it or wait for the new one. I'm glad I bought the one I did. This WRX prototype strikes me as maybe more 'refined' than the current car, more 'grown up' - but also more bland, not as interesting, more 'generic car' and less rounded and distinctive. Kind of like what Subaru/Toyota are thinking of with the next-gen BRZ/86.

It seems to be the inevitable result of 'design by committee' and the group-think process of 'evolving' a car. Except for Mazda who has done a brilliant job with the Miata keeping it's soul intact, everybody else seems to think a car model has to 'grow up' (= become more bland) as it 'matures'.

But then, my biggest problem with the WRX is the harsh ride. It's fine for short drives, but anything over 2-3 hours, even on relatively smooth highways, and the bounciness and jitteriness starts shaking my fillings out. If Subaru has softened the ride of the new WRX enough for my equally softening butt, it might be the logical choice for a next daily driver. Just not as much personality as the current car.

The funny part is, I never like a WRX till the next generation comes out. Then I like the previous one.

That’s the entire Subaru community in a nutshell lol. Everybody hates the new gen. Then after a couple years, everybody loves it. Then the next one comes.

And then whichever one somebody owns is hands down, factually the best gen ever created ever. Period. End thread.

I remember when the hatch came and people were livid. Now people won’t stfu about Subaru not offering a hatch WRX/STI.

That's honestly how I felt about the hatchbacks. When they were still the new thing, I hated them. But now I like them. Although I still truly love the oldschool WRX wagons

The widebody wasn’t bad. The narrow body WRX we got from 08-10 was atrocious. Legitimately looked like an entry level Kia sedan with a hood scoop.

I actually owned a 2012, but it was the sedan, as I preferred it styling wise to the hatch.

You mean the one with a rear that looks like an old Pacer?

To be fair, the pacer didn't have a bad shape overall. The real problem with it was that the window line was parallel to the ground the whole way back. Give that line a bit if a rake and it looks fine.

Another new spy shot. Looks like a levorg sedan to me, which I like. I think the rear fenders look similar to the new brz/86 as well.

I think the massive greenhouse and the comparatively small wheel/tire combo keep it from escaping its economy car looks. They can add all the creases and fins they can fit to the front bumper, but it still looks frumpy. It's unfortunate because the greenhouse and smaller wheels probably make it a better daily driver but at the end of the day if the car doesn't excite me when I see it, I don't want it.

My lease is up on the '18 STI sport in Jan and I'll probably buy it and see when the next model arrives.

From the camo pics it looks like the previous generation Honda Civic that everyone hated for being too boring.
