Heat tape or cable up the down spout along the gutter and zig zag along the overhang. stops the ice dam. Heat tape or cable is on a thermostat with the ability to override. No snow turn it off, warm but freezing at night turn it on. It works well. Even up the valleys, comes in many lengths.
Depending on the length required choose tape or cable.

As the above poster stated, heat trace (electrically heated cable) kits are available for house eaves from any hardware store. Just plug in to an outside receptacle (switched) as needed. The cable attaches to your shingles with clips.
We used to have 8 inches of ice dam on the eaves. No more.

Thank you both for the tip. I'm very much aware of them, but after asking several reliable builders who are friends of mine in our geographic area, they didn't have much good to say about them. According to them, the heat tapes can't keep up with the sheer amount of snow, severe cold, and rapid freeze/thaw cycles we get here. I have a great roof rake, made in Minnesota, that acts sort of like a conveyor belt on a REALLY long handle... you slide it up under the snow, and it just slides off the roof. I've been using it for the past ten years, and haven't had an issue with ice dams; we DID until I got that contraption. However, we got 30" of snow in one 20 hour period, followed by about 6" a day for most of the next week or so... with the occasional thaw in between. A perfect storm kind of thing. No way heat tape would have kept up..at least, so I'm told. To compound matters, I have a huge vaulted cathedral ceiling and no attic for about 2/3 of the house... which really exacerbates the issue. Single pitch roof, too.. no peak. VERY steep.. but also VERY high and a ton of surface area. Think "salt box" on steroids. I have six roof vents on top and constant run soffit vents, but it just wasn't enough this time.

One guy I really respect suggested I look into gutters with fully heated "helmets".. that way the entire run is heated instead of just the narrow channels by heat tape. Probably cost $2K by the time I'm done, but it'll be worth avoiding having to drywall, paint, wallpaper, and spend three full days hacking at ice on a stepladder with a hatchet freezing my @#$# off (OK, that last part was an exaggeration.. I like being outside, and the work was plenty hard enough to keep me warm... just not fun).

I DO appreciate the thoughts.

Today I learned that, because of covid, if you get a package that requires a signiture, you can just give them permission to leave it using your Ring doorbell, and they will sign for you.

That and it takes approximately 5 seconds to change barrels on a Glock.

I have learned to move my computer set up to be as far away from water sources as possible.
Two weeks ago the wife discovered that if she gets to aggressive with the plunger she can break the wax seal between the toilet base and the pipe. This lets the liquid from the bowl to escape, run down the outside of the pipe to the bend and then drip onto the basement ceiling tiles. Which, once thoroughly soaked allow said liquid to leak onto my computer.
She didn't learn anything as she did it again over the week end and you guessed it, my computer, although moved, was still in the "splash zone".
What I learned today is that plumbing companies figure if one young guy with a small snake didn't get it all the first time, send two big old guys with the mother of all electric motor driven snakes to get it done. I'm sure the bill will be more then double too.
Oh and yes the computer set is on the opposite wall now. Far away from any possible spillage. (I hope)

I have these in the suspended ceiling of my basement underneath the spot you talk about, and in every water source in my house. Very cheap insurance and they really do work. I've caught several slow leaks thanks to them, plus they are cute....
