I was wondering where the oil temperature is measured in the motor. I fitted an oil cooler and normal driving the temp only reaches 175 now.

Do you have a thermostat or is it always circulating? I think you'll see lots of threads on track day drivers reporting much higher temps, like 200 and above. Sorry that wasn't a direct answer to the question, but it does seem low.

Did you put it on for a certain reason?

Yes it`s a thermostatic type (75C/165) for track use as my oil temps were really high on track. I made a cover that can easily be removed when needed but I did not try it.

I believe the temp you are seeing is post oil cooler. Thus real Oil temps are 15-20F higher. I suggest you get a different thermostat or use block-off plate. Most ppl agree 270-280F is getting up there. For me that's too warm. I sit on track around 230-240F. Street its much lower. I also run 5w-30 oil 24/7 365

The typical oil flow path with a sandwich plate oil cooler is:

Oil Pan -> Oil Pump -> Oil Cooler -> Oil Filter -> Engine

The OEM engine oil and pressure sensors are located just downstream of the outlet of the oil filter. That means that if you have an oil cooler installed, it will measure post-cooler oil temperature. Even with thermostatic sandwich plate, the oil radiator will still see some oil flow (and therefore cooling)

I also run 5w-30 the temps went much higher @15 minutes+ but I only had the dash gauge to see, probably 270. I agree too hot, hence the oil cooler install. I have covered the oil cooler to stop airflow for daily use, but its not so daily I will test it by the w/e. Thanks for the post cooler answer. Cheers

Your oil temps are post oil cooler and you safely add 30-40F to the post cooler oil temps.

It has been mentioned in a lot of other threads.

You will also find that some like their oil temps high and don't believe in a cooler for a DD car whereas others are more cautious and prefer a cooler.

I believe a cooler is needed based on my oil temps when driving hard, meaning spirited. In autocross i reached 270F easily.

I use 5w-30 so it needs to be warm to flow when DD.Thats why I have covered the cooler and was curious where the temp was read. It`s summer here and I avoid tracking this season (100+on track). The oil still gets hot in cooler weather on track, hence the oil cooler, but runs to cold for my liking in DD use. Being that the temps will be higher in the engine I feel more comfortable with the thicker oil(5w-30) compared to the 0-20
