(Looking for Opinion) Most Comfortable Coilovers? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hi,

Before I get started, I understand that having own a GT86 it is not meant to be driven or have the same comfort like some cars. However, as I will be handing over my 2015 GT86 to my wife to be her daily drive (currently with Tein Street Advance Z - but the wifey still complaining on harsh ride) and due to budget constraints we wont be buying another car due to the yearly insurance premiums & taxes (it is much more cheaper to just maintain my GT86 right now).

Would like to seek some opinion on a good coil overs which provides (in your experience) the best ride comfort as we won't be using this car for track or any other racing activities aside from her daily commute to work. Right now I am looking at the HKS Hipermax IV GT but would like to hear if there are any other opinions out there.

Much appreciated!

Side note: the car is pretty much stock aside from the TEIN Street Advance Z coilovers

Stock feels good to me. Cheaper too.

softer springs = more comfy

I'd try OEM springs with Koni Yellows

The latest Ohlins and to a lesser extent KW V3s.

Buy her a different car. The 86 is just not made to be soft which it sounds like what the priority will be.

I would say Kw v1/3 and longer springs to achieve a closer to stock ride height. Maybe with 4k springs for the rear too. From my experience if you run them at a decent ride height with enough travel and the correct settings they’re more comfortable than the stock ones, and I had the 2017 showa base suspensions not the pre-facelift models which are known to be harsher.

I would go back to stock springs and run B6 dampers.

ST coilovers ride really nice for the price.

But I do have to second B6 Bilstein struts/shocks + stock springs. I think you will find this setup to be sportier than it sounds. Bilstein B6 will also last a very long time.

For comfort you want travel, good damping, soft-ish springs. For that reason I would advise against the HKS Hipermax IV GT because of their spring rates of 6k/4k.

I second this option. The OEM 17+ dampers are pretty good. Might be able to find some softer springs to add to them.

I can tell you that +17 OEM is very comfortable compared to some coilovers. I have been rocking them for over a year now. They do feel crashy on the high speed bumps but overall they are good. The thing is when you upgrade to better tires, stickier ones then you find the OEM suspension a bit lacking. As in leaning too much with aggressive driving and rather floaty on some irregular tarmacs.

But hey you can't have your cake and eat it too, unless you get some high end coils. It is a matter of compromise and you really have to make a choice.

You can't go wrong with a Bilstein and spring combo either. But OEM will be cheaper to buy from someone who has upgraded to coils.
