All this Fridge talk reminds me, I need a new chest or standup freezer. Needs to be one that is "garage rated". Anyone have any recommendations?

I appreciate my GM"s enthusiasm for the company and moving forward, but sometimes he just needs to let me do my job without interference. Working on a new project and having someone with an accounting background come make suggestions everyday that change the direction of the project when he can't see the full picture gets really old

I suggest that you just reply "good idea, boss". Then proceed with your original strategy. Tomorrow, there is a good chance he won't remember what he said yesterday.

That is pretty much what I have been doing. He is stuck on this part being made of plastic and it is just not going to work that way. Not to mention be way more expensive, have a higher MOQ, and we will have to buy tooling for it to be built. If it is made of stainless sheet it just needs lasered and have one bend put in it. MOQ is just whatever they can laser out of one sheet.

What is "garage rated"?

I have a chest freezer in the garage I bought at home depot about 12 years ago. Still working great. I remember I got it super cheap because it had a little dent in the top. It is a Magic Chef.

Looks exactly like this.

It means its rated to keep it's cool when in an area where the ambient temp may drop below 50 degrees or so. A regular refrigerator/freezer stops working at a certain temperature, and things begin to thaw. Our current one does that.

Basically, it has a small heater that kicks in so your thermostat works properly in cold weather.

Ironically, it wouldn't be a problem in a very cold climate because the ambient temp drops below freezing everything stays frozen. It's when the temperature hovers just above or below 32 F that it's an issue.

Yea, that one doesn't work in the situation I describe "should ideally be placed in areas where the ambient temperature ranges from 32°F to 100°F for efficient operation". It stops working at 32°F and things start thawing out.

Since he has a bean counter background, aybe stress the cost savings of using SS, to support your approach -

It gets below 32 in your garage? Wow.

No, that's the problem, it get's cool enough the thermostat stops working but not cold enough to keep things frozen. The freezer basically works "part time".

Atlanta does have sustained temps in the 35 to 45 degree range for a few weeks in the winter. That seems to be the "sweet spot" for this type of issue.

Wow, we get regularly down to the 20s here for a few weeks, but my garage has never been below about 48. Maybe because my furnace and water heater are in there? Plus a second story above it? My fridge and freezer are within a few feet of the water heater and furnace.
