I saw Doug DeMuro do a review on the new Dodge TRX. Beefy truck, but as crazy as it is, the Cybertruck’s top trim will be $20k cheaper and will be 0.8 seconds faster to 60 at 2.9 seconds versus the TRX’s 3.7 seconds.

For that price tag, I’d buy a used f450 platinum. That’s an 8.5 second 0-60 time and almost 1000ft/lbs.

When Tesla announced the new battery, they also announced the new battery pack architecture that integrates the battery into the body to save weight and improve strength, no different than how a Ducati or F1 engine is designed to be a structural component of the frame. The caveat to this is that the battery pack can’t be easily removed and swapped like Nio’s cars. At least, that is my take.

https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/tesla...first-picture/

I’m really interested to see if Tesla is able to accomplish their goals for their factories. If they can truly scale their gigafactory into a terafactory. The prefixes aren’t accurate; it is more like a factor of ten, I believe, but still, if they can reduce the size of the footprint of the gigafactory but increase its output by a factor of ten then that would be a game changer. Musk was once asked how many gigafactories we would need in the world to electrify all cars, and he said not ten and not a thousand, speaking logarithmically, and said that it would be 100-200, but now it may be closer to 10-20. We will see.

New Model S and X. From a design perspective, the less integrated screen seems less upscale, so I don’t know if this new design will be well received. The screen is probably more functional though. The steering wheel is interesting. From a self-driving/AutoPilot perspective it makes sense, but I don’t know how much I’d like that for everyday driving in parking lots and whatnot. For commuting, it looks good. I would have to see if the angle is correct. The best position for long distances is at 5 and 7. It is definitely modern/Scandinavian/simple/spartan.

Give me the old one with the new center screen and I might be in. The new dash design (not just the screens) looks like a bad ride a Disney.

I keep looking at it, and I think I am down for the new interior. Like I said, going from the large, 19'' screen might be a downgrade for some people if it was used for multitasking, but maybe it was overkill, so they reduced the size.

I tend to like modern, Scandinavian designs and designs of furniture from the 60's like the mid century modern--Japanese design too--feng shui. There is something relaxing to the interior. I see why it will be too foreign, unfamiliar or uncomfortable for many.

Touch screen controls are garbage. Multiple menus to go through, garbage. It may look clean and neat to some, but give me a dedicated fixed mechanical button or rotary dial, immediately accessible and with no latency, even if it means a more "cluttered" look.

Was reading an article this morning that these models are already in production and will start delivery next month. I don't know what their backlog is, but I wonder if its possible you orders thinking you were getting V1 and now you'll end up with V2.

Maybe Tesla buyers don't care, but I sure would.

Yea, that's one of the things I don't like about the Mach E. Ford went "Tesla" on the dash.

I agree, but I think it really, really depends on the UI. You get a large, capacitive touch screen that is a giant iPad then that greatly changes the clicking experience. My big thing is having to go into menu after menu after menu. The 86 is perfect for quickly turning off traction control and turning on the heated seats. The biggest disadvantage with the 86 and cars like it, is you can't add more buttons or options or menu items. Want to set the seat heaters to come on when cabin temperatures are below X and outside temps are below Y then it would be possible, or rather, there is just potential for endless configurations, so I get Telsa, and I get your point.

That's what i hate most about all these infotainment systems. They're just menus and menus and menus of crap that you have to keep digging through to get to where you want I think that's what makes the rotary dial (like Idrive) the easiest to use in that case. punching in a navigation address still sucks though cuz you have to scroll through each letter one by one still. The touchpads in Lexus and other products had the potential to be better but in the case of Lexus their UI was not really made for touchpad navigation so it makes it cumbersome to use.

Im amazed that none of these manufactuers have made a UI like a smortphone (I think Volvo's might be similar? im not sure about Tesla)
With a touch screen it'll be so intuitive and easy to understand.

Touchscreens on the other hand, they have to be responsive otherwise they are just as frustrating. My old Honda Fit's wasnt the most responsive and it got a little bit annoying. My Scion Im (using the much loved Pioner HU that is the same as the FRS/86) is pretty responsive but its also pretty basic so there isnt much functionality to it.
