This is my poor old "pet" raccoon. I call it "gimpy". Why? Because it walks on 3 legs, one of it's hind legs is broken and tucked under its body. Part of the broken leg sticks out and looks raw. I reckon it got hit by a car.

It comes around in the daytime. I feed it and give it water. It then eats and curls up on the door mat at the back sliding door or goes over at the corner of the deck and sleeps all day. It's been hanging out here for several months.

I should hit it in the head and put it out of its misery.

Any thoughts?

A bullet would be faster and more humane. The little guy is probably suffering horribly and won't make the winter anyway.

I agree, either trap it and take it to the vet, or give it a bullet. Bullet is still more humane in this case.

Oh, and don't eat it. It's very likely to have a raging infection at minimum.

Check around for wildlife rescue/rehab centres near you. If none are local call the humane society or local vet.
Those in Nova Scotia have Hope for Wildlife. It is a charitable wildlife rehabilitation and education organization located in Seaforth, Nova Scotia. Since 1997, they have rescued, rehabilitated, and released over 50,000 injured and orphaned wild animals representing over 250 species.

https://www.hopeforwildlife.net/

There are other organizations all across North America that do similar work. Check out this site:

Yep, unless he's in a town that makes it a crime to discharge a gun. A local LEO would probably take care of it quickly, though. By now it has little to no chance of survival and is likely dangerous to curious kids or pets.
