Rebuild with OEM short block
Has anyone done a rebuild after a spun bearing using an oem short block and their original heads?
I know people havent had great luck with built motors but wondering if anyone has gone the factory route |

@ermax
I'd do it in a heartbeat. Just takes patience and attention to detail. Lots of steps, each of them equally important. Can't rush it.

For the extra 1,400 I used an IAG short block. Better oiling and everything upgraded to handle in excess of 500 hp. Staying NA I have a lot of confidence now. Motor built by a top notch race shop. I do NOT want to go through the blown motor nightmare again!

Rebuild with OEM short block
Quote:
I spun #3 and rebuilt at 89,964mi and now I'm at 120,686mi. I beat the living crap out of it and all is well. I burnt oil on the original engine but after the rebuild I don't burn a drop between changes. I subscribe to the hard break in which may have something to do with my lack of oil consumption. I did an OEM short block, new VVT filters and new injector seals. It's a bitch to get all the packing seal off everything (all total I probably have 24 hours just scraping off packing). I flushed a lot of water through the heads to be sure I got all the packing out of it or any bearing material. All total I had about $2500 in the job including oil and coolant. If it wasn't for the packing it's actually really easy to work on. You can pull the engine in no time and I didn't need a bunch of special tools. You also have to be really meticulous about applying the new packing seal. When doing the packing do not use the original service manual, use the instructions from the valve spring recall. They are WAY more detailed. Last edited by ermax; 11-25-2020 at 10:59 PM. |

I think we'd do just fine working together on a project.
