Surely they can't be fitting the same specification pump, thinking yours is faulty, rather than being incompatable with the US fuel?

Yep. The reason for the issue had not been formally diagnosed. It may or may not be ethanol. That's the running theory on this forum at this time. Could also be a qc issue or voltage issue or part fitment. Once they do enough research tsb will be out. At this time it is not fully understood why the issue exists.

The ethanol free fuel has (for now) stopped mine. Luckily I have a station near me. I'll be filling up the next tank with normal 91 (10% ethanol) to log the issue with my dealer though.

No wonder we get problems with straight forward servicing.
Assuming this problem doesn't exist in Japan, their logic in diagnosing the problem is pathetic.

Run yours on E15 and get it back as soon as it starts chirping again to help them in their thought process, please.

For what it's worth my 86 has just over 300miles on it and I haven't used any petrol with ethanol in it and I can't say I have noticed any noises like you guys in the US are reporting.

The weather is cold here as well so maybe in summer this issue will arise

no problem with the service at all. took it in, explained the issue, had it fixed. that's pretty straight forward. it's not up to them to tear apart the fuel pump for analysis. when things like this fail it gets sent to a corporate lab for testing and analysis so that it can be prevented or fixed on all vehicles. yes the ethanol is a likely culprit as many other hpfp applications in the states have seen similar issues. but that's for the corporate guys to decide not a dealer service department. TSB's dont happen because one car had a problem... if anything you guys should be taking them in so that the number of cases increases. i got my hpfp replaced in 1.5 hrs after spending .5 hrs at the shop the previous day. 2 hrs of my time went to fixing my car but also to letting toyota know that every car has this susceptibility. honestly this was one of the most straight forward experiences i've had. and yeah this shop agrees with E10 fuel contributing but it's not up to them to say that's the problem.

Interesting theory that I never really considered, but it's something I will definitely give conscious thought to when I get my FR-S.

@BadCompany235: Sorry if this has been covered already, Bad', but could you tell us: Is the replacement HPFP unit identical to the one they took out, or is it a modified unit?

Thanks.

The dealer may have done their job but for you, it's likely to be just the same as it was for you and a waste of everyone's time.
