Damaged or not, that would be pretty cool if my S13 transformed into an S14 at the end of a drift season.

Assuming the frame is straight... yeah.

It does get old with this car. I have to do grocery runs late at night when I know there will be plenty of room for all the sliding around. Insurance was getting out of hand.

Yes, switch initiates PD.

The missing piece of information is that you crashed the car 2 or 3 times and you had to replace it each time. So by the end of the drift season yes, you actually did move from an S13 to an S14

Yes these are so much fun to pull off some mad skidz in, but even on oem tires, you have plenty of grip for the street. This isn't some prepped dirft car from the factory that doesn't want to through a corner any way other than sideways. I'd say the twins are remarkably stable at freeway speeds considering the weight. Trust me, it won't be an issue even with tc off.

And how about the "shift lock"? I heard in video that if you downshift from high rpms the car automatically locks rear wheels to get you into the drift (Subaru brz video). How does it work? Is it enabled only in "track mode" or is there any way how to turn it off?

Btw. is there any "grip" differences in BRZ, GT86, FR-S?

That sounds like a good way to end up with "engine lock"

Wouldn't locking the rear diff on deceleration make the car understeer like a pig?

In stock trim the FRS has stiffer rear springs and softer fronts which make the rear end more tail happy. BRZ/86 have a closer F/R balance which is more neutral but still a touch softer in the front.

Shift lock does not "lock" the rear wheels. If you bang the car down into a lower gear without rev matching, sometimes the engine does not get dragged up to speed quick enough to match the speed the car is traveling and it will break traction. This is why a RWD car will spin during a money shift.

If you haven't already OP, take one for a test drive and see what you think. If you drive a manual older impreza, the clutch will feel a bit familiar, but everything else is proper sports car ergonomics and feel.

To elaborate more.

A shift lock initiation is done by downshifting mid turn without rev matching.
The sudden jolt to the driveline can cause the rear tires to lose grip.

Not nice to the drivetrain at all.

And yes, locking on decel can cause understeer.
