Back-in-the-day story time -

It was a cold, drizzly, winter day in Baumholder, Germany, when I was range officer on a 106 mm recoilless rifle range. Things were going good (no cook-offs) when a cow wandered out on the range.

Before I could get the range shut down, a gun crew had fired off a HE round. Yep, they hit the "target" with a 50 cal WP spotter round and then fired the main gun!

I was pissed - they swore that they were aiming at the shell of an M-113 APC target and the cow got in the way. I called BS. I cleared the range and sent that gun crew down range with entrenching tools to find every bit of that cow and bury it, yep every little piece.

THE END

Yep, I used to go coon hunting at night, back in the 70s, over in Fresno, CA with my buddy who used bluetick coonhounds. He would shoot the coons out of the trees with a .22 rifle using a flashlight to see them. I thought it was sort of fun, till my flask of whisky ran dry -

As far as coyotes, I managed an agricultural research station near the town of Coyote, CA. (I wonder how it got its name) Late in the day after leaving the station, I would have to drive through the coyote hills to get home. Sometimes I would spot a coyote and take it out with my .30-30 just for fun. But, not at night, because I would have to get home to my whisky bottle -

Oh, yes hunting wild boar. I would go wild boar hunting with my brother down around Hollister, CA. We would hunt them during the day because it was safer to flush them out of the nest as they were sleeping during the day. I have been told that as they roamed around at night and you ran across one with piglets, by the time you "found it" in a night scope, it might be already chewing on your leg -

Another story. It was a late in the evening when me and my driver was cruising through the back roads of the German countryside in our jeep. Out of nowhere, something jumped out on the dirt road in front of us ..... and my driver hit it and it flew off into the ditch. It was squealing real loud, so I jumped out of my jeep to make sure it wasn't a person. Nope, it was a wild boar.

I couldn't stand to see the animal suffering, so I told Chandler (my driver) to take his M-14 rifle and put it out of his misery. Well, he had the selector lever on full auto and emptied the whole damn clip into that hog. About that time a forest meister came down the road in his VW fastback and his little blue light flashing.

Welp, I didn't want to take the time to try to explain that the boar ran out in front of us and were just putting the wounded beast out of its misery ..... and NOT wild boar hunting! So, I told Chandler to take off across country and we soon outran the forest meister in his VW.

THE END

I can attest to the sausage being particularly good from these.

A friend used to rent the basement apartment from a farmerwho had a problem with coyotes. He lost some livestock and then the family pet.So my friend who was into tactical gear and competitive combat shooting startedgoing out at dusk to hunt coyotes. He had all the gear, night vision goggles, night scope and a tricked out target grade AR. Night after night for a coupleof weeks he’d go out, sweep the fields from the cover of the tree line butnever got a clear shot at a coyote.
Now the farmer’s one kid (offspring not goat) had troubles with the law. Earlyone morning my friend got a knock on his door. When he opened it he was face toface with an officer in full S.W.A.T. riot gear. Words were exchanged and oncethe officer was satisfied he turned to walk away. But, as he turned he asked myfriend;
You ex-military?
My Friend: No.
Officer: But you have had training, right?
My friend: eeeyyaaaa…
Officer: I knew it. You move to well for a civilian. Oh, bythe way… you have some real sweet night gear too. However, ours is better! Tellyour landlord we’ll be back.
As it turns out the local LEOs had been keeping the farmunder surveillance.
Fitting end to the coyote part of the story. A week or twolater my friend was walking back to the farm house after being down at hismakeshift gun range. He had taken his iron sighted M1 rifle down for somepractice before an upcoming match. He was walking a path that ran along thetree line when a large coyote just sauntered out from the woods in front of him.It started to trot down the same path. He stopped, took quick aim and fireddropping the unsuspecting coyote. TMK The farmer has had no more coyote problemssince. My friend moved.

Can hunt whatever. Or have as a force multiplier, which is what NV is predominantly used as in conjunction with firearms.

Depending on what you're doing, it just doesn't make sense to not shoot frequently at night.

In terms of defense and such, most bad things happen in low light, statistically speaking. Understanding what does and doesn't work in such conditions should be something people explore and experience when going out shooting.

You normally walk around with a camera on a helmet on your head?

Nope. But that's not what I was referring to. I'll still happily own it if I want to.

But do you boo boo.

As it says in the title (no philosophical discussions) so I'll let you just think whatever you want. If you want some, go get them. If not, cool.

Man, you are the one trying to be serious about it. I was just remarking on that because I found the thought comical. You don't need to justify the "it's fancy and I want it" deal to a bunch of people on a car forum. In fact, based on what happens in the actual car threads, it's probably better you don't try lol.

I agree, a weapon is always more effective if you can see what you are shooting at -
