Valve spring recall would be one. I want to say that there was some issue with the di injectors as well? Maybe something to do with tuning. I also want to say one of the coil packs went out early too, but that's an easy fix. It's been awhile since I looked into everything but I would think stuff like the valve springs won't be an issue on the 2nd gen. Hard to see Subaru/Toyota making the same mistake twice. Even then, seems like it doesn't affect the majority of cars. I just personally know 2 people that were bit by their 2013's so I'm always wary of recommending the first model year. Yeah I know my personal experiences don't reflect the statistical majority at all but hey, it's gotta count for something.
Oh and I've owned my 2015 for a year and a half and it's given me nothing but smiles

Valve springs had nothing to do with it being a first-year model. It affected other Subaru models as well and was caused by a supplier falsifying material certificates. |

I'm a sucker for punishment, I wait 1 yr, never the first yr model.
Back in '79, Honda came out with their new engine, double overhead cam, so I bought a '80 model. After a few months, I thought they should have done a few thing differently. Well the '81 model had all the changes I had thought of. |

I am not planning to replace my car. It is still so much fun and working just fine for now. I might go with an engine rebuild and replace brakes, wheels, and shocks (again), rusting panels with carbon fiber. That is another new car.

I just bought my 2020. It won't be paid off until 2025... so I'm waiting at least that long.

None of those, aside from the wheel studs (which I think has more to do with people choosing wheels that weren’t meant for the car) are anything bad at all. My 2016 needed to have the dash fix done above the center vent. I think it was done anyway, you can see where it was pinched in place. Haven’t had the issue with the plastic piece near the defogger switch. Haven’t had any bumper sag issue. Again I think that is probably due to people removing and reinstalling their bumper cover/and or hitting the cover on parking curbs, etc. So basically user error. I’ve had the low idle issue, but only with the AC on and sitting at a stop. It’s never stalled, it just feels weird. And I’m used to it now. ![]() To my knowledge the valve spring recall was voluntary except in Kalifornia (big surprise), and an extremely small number of cars had any major issues. Mostly caused by actually getting the recall done, ironically. It all happened within the bumper to bumper warranty period. I would buy a first year of the 2nd gen car in a heartbeat. I’ve owned several first year Toyotas and a first year Subaru, and I never had any problems. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I was on stock wheels when they broke. Rotating my tires and I was using the included tools to remove the wheels. Never had an issue breaking studs on any other car. Not a user error for the bumper if even subaru of japan released a part to "fix" the issue. I would disagree and say my window seal issue is a big issue. Others have had their seals deform because of the window indexing and letting water in. I get wind buffering and my tint only lasts a year before I have to replace it (a $300 job for quality tint and work at a shop).

I've had little issues with MY17.
Stripped two wheel studs removing aluminum wheel nuts from my winter setup.(lesson learned) The driver side window regulator was replaced under warranty due to being loose/out of alignment. Probably from the window being frozen during the winter. A screw that holds the dash in place near the speaker kept coming lose and rattling. Added medium loctite to the threads and it hasn't backed out since. |

I bought a 2020 model, because I needed a car as soon as possible. Even if I could wait, it was too risky to wait for the next generation model. If next model is a worthwhile change, then I'll wait a couple more years to have all the known issues sorted out.
