I know it's not plastic, but has anyone ever repainted a diecast model? Specifically AutoArt ones that are NIB?

I've done some painting on a diecast Maisto. Treated it the same way as a plastic model.

All the same principals apply. The materials are irrelevant.

But stripping paint off metal is different than plastic models, right? Can't use paint stripper on plastic since it'll melt it?

I didn't strip paint when I painted the diecast - just sprayed over the existing color. You didn't specify to what extent you wanted to do the repaint (full disassembly, strip, repaint or partial disassembly, mask/paint).

No need to strip the paint. Just lightly sand to rough it up enough to take new paint.

I was going to fully disassemble everything and repaint it a different color.

What kind of paint should be used if sanding is used? Tamiya TS-line paint? Or automotive paint like Duplicolor? I'm assuming if I can use Tamiya, I wouldn't have to use a paint hardener/curer.

I should probably try practicing on one of my old Maisto models before ordering and spending over $250 on an AutoArt. lol

Hi Weederr33, do you have any connections with East Africa? I note the giraffe in the background. I used to see them in households who had some connection with Kenya..

Can use either a hobby paint or automotive touch up depending which has the colours you want. The tamiya paints are great and easy to work with.
Practicing is a good plan.

I have not had a good experience with Duplicolor for models. The issue I had with metallic colors was that the metal flake in Duplicolor wasn't to 'scale'. It would look fine on a real car, but on a model it didn't look right - the flakes were too large. Solid colors should be fine, but I just stick to Tamiya or Testors for models.

Lots of great videos on YT about painting model cars.

Tamyia makes a whole line of Model auto paints with metal flake that is almost to scale. They are lacquer so a bit harder to work with but they have most of the Subaru and Toyota colours.
