Quick search shows me a claim that a blue engine cover was available for the BRZ in Japan only as part of the accessories line-up. So yes, OEM upgrade, but my first quick source is less than reputable

If I can get the answer I need by asking others here who may have already purchased one of these or had one already installed on their engine from the factory, it's still doing the same amount of research, just in a different way. But it has the additional advantage of being backed up by actual owners. For instance, I know that some of the Scion tC cars had blue, lighted LED badges, but I never knew if they were OEM or aftermarket until I did some research myself. That information I was able to find without asking in any forum because at the time, I wasn't a forum member of any enthusiast car site. But now that I am, I can simply ask a question and hope that others with more knowledge may be able to answer. Is it that difficult for people now to answer questions that they may possess accurate knowledge about, instead of referring the seeker to a search engine? I mean, this is a FORUM, right? We're here to help each other, right? |

I've searched for a while and found those in red also. But I can't find evidence that they are OEM. Does your cover have a Subaru stamp and part number on it on the back side? Like this:

And as for the red ones that I have seen in pictures, The one I found available for sale seen in the picture below, does not have a Subaru part number associated with it in the ad. Also, if you'll notice as indicated by the green arrows, there is overspray of the red paint, indicating to me that someone is taking the black OEM plastic covers, spraypainting the top-side and trying to sell them as "JDM" parts.
If these different color engine covers were truly OEM, they would have a different part number than the one I posted in the picture above. The fact that actual blue plastic was used in the part that MJones_RB posted in his picture is leading me to believe it is indeed an actual OEM part. However, I'd like to see concrete evidence with a Subaru part number on it backing this up. The part number of the blue cover will differ slightly from the part number of the black cover and will be on the side that did NOT get melted. |

I'm looking at buying some VHT Burnt Copper Metallic Engine spray paint. Would that be feasible to paint all the plastic coverings in the engine bay (engine cover, water pump, alternator)?
Would I also then need to buy any specific plastic primer or clear coat for a finish? Id rather leave it semi-flat like the original finish of the plastic, just changing up the color to be metallic orange to match my H8R life. Any input would be fantastic, thanks in advance if anyone ever comes back to this!

Just make sure the surfaces are clean, clean, clean, Wash down with a good grease cutting solvent and then wipe down with alcohol before coating them.

So Id need an additional solvent for cleaning the oil from the plastic, could you please recommend a brand I could get for cheap at Walmart? I did pick up the VHT Primer also just in case, but I put back the clear coat - I dont need the gloss protection. Thanks in advance!

On a purely personal opinion and subjective note don't go nuts and paint everything that doesn't move orange. A couple of selected items in balance will have a better cosmetic impact (again in my eyes) than every single cover and surface. In other words please don't be this guy:
