Yes the S2000 cost more, I don’t think it would be priced at $50k plus today. I know you meant with inflation it would cost that much based on the original MSRP.
It’s also a convertible which adds complexity and cost. I would agree it was in a class above the twins. If Toyota/Subaru built the twins to a higher price point, they would be able to compete with the S2000. It also makes you realize what a good sports car the S2000 was/is. Actually I take that back. A modern S2000 would probably cost $50K plus. It would be in the Supra price range I think.

The FA20 is a junk engine

Good points, and it’s performance and reliability helped to justify the higher price. It would be competing with the Cayman, Supra, and Z4 today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The FA20 does really pull hard in that range, it feels like a different engine. And my FR-S puts a smile on my face every time I drive. Despite some of its faults, it really is a fun motor. And it has some nifty technology packaged into it. I hate to sound like Toyota and Subaru just wrote off the engine, I know thought and effort went into it. I still feel like they had to hold some things back to meet a price point. Like all things in life I guess. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It would have been interesting to see if Yamaha could have whipped up a variable tuned intake for the FA20, although it would have complicated things, hence probably why they didn't do it. The trade off is the 15% you're down on torque from 3500 to 4500, otherwise the FA20 has an exceptionally flat 150lb/foot across the bulk of it's usable revband.. Quite impressive if you ask me...
It's not like an Ecotec LNF/LTG where the torque curve being so flat is as fake as Trump's tan, to prevent grenading transmissions, etc.. :P If the ECU wasn't limiting torque things would be much different for those engines. |
