Post 2017+ BRZ Trunk Swap with 2015 BRZ - Does it work?

I currently have a 2015 BRZ. I am looking to do a trunk swap with a 2017+ model because I like the new OEM spoiler.

From my research, it seems like the trunk measurements are the same (just the additional reinforcement in the 2017+ version), but just for peace of mind, does anyone know if this swap would work?

If it does, this would lead to my second question: The 2017+ versions have a backup camera. It's definitely a nice to have, and I was wondering if the backup camera on the new trunk can work with the OEM head unit of my 2015 model.

I've been searching for an answer all week, and haven't found anything conclusive on either question. Any insight is appreciated!

Cheers!

The trunk mechanically is identical, but I don't think the backup cam won't work with your old head unit.

So just to clarify, there's a possibility the backup cam CAN work?

I think you need a new head unit and you need to run wiring between the new unit and the cam.

The backup camera will work with your headunit.

You will need an adapter similar to this (I bought the same exact one from this vendor but ended up not using it, let me know if you're interested):

http://ae64.com/Rear-camera-16-pin.htm

The pigtail connector is different on 2016+ (possibly because of the camera). You will either need repin with the connector on your current trunk or buy a spare one.

You will end up with 2 extra wires for the camera and depending on the configuration of your adapter (RCA vs loose wires), you can either connect those 2 camera wires directly to the adapter or solder an RCA pig tail and connect via an RCA cable to the adapter.

Daver on our forum did the same swap and has the cables labeled for the repin:

Wow this is great information! I saw some videos of people installing aftermarket backup cameras into a 2015 model with the OEM HU, but just wanted peace of mind before moving forward with the trunk swap.

Make sure to upgrade the trunk gas struts to the 2017+ versions when you do. The newer ones are a bit stronger in order to help with the heavier lid and new spoiler. I’m thinking of installing the 2017 GT spoiler on my ‘15 FR-S but I’m planning on leaving my trunk lid stock and drill/cut all of the holes myself. I’ll upgrade the struts at that time also.
