I'm on Grassroots Motorsports forum and someone posted it up in the vehicles for sale section. Was looking for a $2000 or less beater, for just a little bit more get a classic 4AGE powered vehicle that just needs a little bit of work (oil leak after running but not when sitting [probably the distributor], A/C not blowing cold, passenger headlight sometimes sticks).

The G35 and G37 are turd cars. They scream, "I'm a poseur!" quite loudly. E90 BMW all day long for a comfy but sporty RWD car. I'd be perfectly happy with a 328i. Reliable and cheap.
But I'm sticking with the FRS. Far more fun in stock and near stock form than any of the other choices.

Yes the Si is uglier, but it is 300 pounds lighter, has a much slicker shifter, and the steering feels more deliberate. The mk5/6 is heavier but much slower to respond, the mk7 feels lighter and does not offer as much feedback, the Si steering really felt the best. It also is a much easier car to work on, so that's also another plus. Straight line speed does not concern me. There'll always be a guy with higher boost, aftermarket header/downpipe, etc. Quote:

Hahaha a GT3/GT4 are pretty much the only cars that I REALLY want that really speak to me and that I would happily step away from my 86 for.
Unfortunately I don’t make that kind of money so it’s not really in the cards for me, at least right now. There’s nothing else out there on the market that gets me excited right now. While not RWD, I really did enjoy my 2016 STI I had that I actually sold my 2013 FRS for. Definitely the best all around car I’ve owned. But unless the new one is a GIGANTIC leap forward in terms of durability and performance, I have no interest in getting into another one.

But that's why I am coming back to the 86 as well.. if mine ever shows up. I'm actually waiting for an update from Toyota right now. I really think these cars will be so much more appreciated when every car that roles of the assembly line is full of nannies, sensors, electronic, automatic everything boring ass couches on wheels. I'm all for comfy safe commuting and all that but that's what my other car is for lol. Keep up the good work on your car, looking forward to it's evolution! |

Get a Zupra. Toyota is discounting them because of the upcoming 2021 model.

If I didn't insist on having a manual trans, I'd be overwhelmed with choices. Alas, I've driven the best of automatics and I don't see myself settling for one. It makes any car more fun at road-legal speeds.

300 what?

I'd recommend you drive the revised Mk7 GTI with the active (oversteering) LSD and larger brakes. Was a huge improvement over the 2015 model. The Si is a good match for the earlier Mk7 GTIs, but not the newer ones with the trick LSD. And the GTI has considerably larger brakes than the Si. Hell they're larger brakes than those found on my Cayman. But if you're looking for a track project car, I would just stay away from FWD altogether. Turbo as well.

The mk7 is indeed lighter, from 3034 lbs to 3126 depending on configuration (https://newspress-vwusamedia.s3.amaz...8494f0ae0f.pdf) I did drive a 2017 with sport package on the appropriate roads. I did like the quicker ratio steering, but it didn't quite have the feel that my mk5 did. If do a side-by-side I"m sure I was going faster than the mk7 but it didn't make me feel more connected with the car, which is what I'm after. |
