Not sure how, but I’m going to call this assembly error by me. Kicked out both rocker arms on the intake side of number two cylinder. Explains the oil pressure drop too from the lifters popping out of the oil galley.

I recall the first large engine I overhauled at age 14. Our oldest Oliver tractor was burning a lot of oil and had lost power. My grandfather said it needed new rings and a valve job. I asked him if I could do that and he said OK. Now, keep in mind I didn't have a manual nor a shop manual. So, I tore into that puppy, being careful to place the pieces I took off in order along the shelves in the barn. Welp, I got it apart, took the head into the machine shop/parts dealer in town to have the valves ground. I purchased a gasket set and a set of rings and rod bearings. When I was trying to put the pistons back in with the new rings my father showed me a trick, using a cut open tin can and a large hose clamp. That's after he scolded me for "spending too much of his money on that old tractor". OK, so far so good, so I thought. Oh yes, my grandfather did insist that he torque the head bolts down. When I asked him how tight they should be, he replied, "head bolt tight, using a 1/2" drive socket and a medium sized breaker bar". I buttoned that puppy up and dumped some oil in it. Ready to fire it up. However, that puppy wouldn't crank - literally wouldn't crank (it was a crank start tractor). I thought that I wasn't strong enough so I asked my grandfather to try. He pushed down on the crank and told me that the engine was froze up. He then asked me if I had shimmed the rod bearings. He could tell from the look on my face that I didn't know what he was talking about. So he explained to me about the purpose of those skinny little washers between the rod caps and the rods. So, since it was time for a trip to town, we stopped in at the machine shop/ parts supply store and he had the parts man show me how to use that plastic string and gauge to properly shim and space the new rod bearings. So, after doing that, that puppy fired right up an ran good for several years. That was our go-to tractor when anything got stuck in muddy fields (check out those wheels). THE END |

The first time I rebuilt a 2 stroke dirtbike I forgot a tiny woodruff key and the thing was trying to run backwards. It happens. I now build turbine engines but with all the regulations they make it almost impossible to mess that up and we still get a lot of test rejects. |

Kinda. I split my time in thirds between the car, the SUV, and the motorcycle.
