I was talking with a neighbor that works at an assisted living facility. She said they can't get the workers to come back to work. Are they scared of getting the virus? No. The facility can't compete with people doing nothing at home getting unemployment plus the additional $600/week.

More people on the government payroll. No shame.

That's easy to fix. Ask them what they are going to do in on August 1 when the $600 runs out and you won't rehire them. If they say "I'll figure it out then" you don't want them as employees anyway. It also means they quit their job which may make them ineligible for the COVID coverage, if not unemployment.

Our company let furloughed employees know when recalled they had x number of days to return to work (I believe it was 14). If they did not it falls under the job abandonment clause of the handbook and they will be marked as "voluntarilly quit" which means no unemployment.

Yea, I was kinda shocked when she told me the story. I thought they have to return to work when available or return any covid benefits received. I don't know, seems this is all happening so fast that there is lots of opportunity for fraud, and too many cases to police properly. The ex-fraud investigator in me is not liking this.

I don't believe you have to return any received under valid circumstances but you would have to return those after a return to work order if you refuse to return to work but keep reporting that you have not been offered employment.

There is a possibility if you can prove you are still impacted (like helping treat a COVID patient) you could refuse and still continue to legally receive benefits, but that is going to be relatively rare.

Of course, COVID or no, some people are willing to play this game. Then there are people like my two adult sons I had to convince to file for the benefit. They both said they didn't need the money and didn't see any reason to take it. I was very proud of them but pointed out that they would need the money if this went on for an extended period and/or either of their parents lost their jobs.

Still makes me feel like I may have done something right after all.

this doesn't surprise me in the least. most assisted living places are owned by massive corporations, paying minimum wage, and basically running people out the door from the moment they hire them. i've talked to plenty of staff at the few places we do work at. i haven't met any of them that were happy to be there for anything other than a paycheck.
