Yamaha started a program like that when I left the motorcycle industry. So I only went through part of the program. They wanted to try to standardize troubleshooting practices to make it easier to work with the regional service reps. The guys that got to go to the gold class had parts from VR46's MotoGP bike they got to check out. I was very jealous.

Joke a side, I hope to see these kind of program happen in US more. This should reduce the mishap from happening at the dealership repairs/recalls.

I planted 8 tomato plants, which is complete overkill, since I'm the only one in the family that eats them.

So I get a box from QVC yesterday. My mother spends way too much time on QVC. Six more tomato plants. I hope the neighbors like tomatoes. I think my mom needs a buying intervention.

It would take me forever to explain since it would require explaining the basics of how a fork works.

If you go down to step FD11-13 you can see the inner cartridge assembly. Down towards the bottom at CD1 onward he disassembles the cart. This is a Showa, I usually worked on KYB's.

i don't do quick-change places. the whole point of bringing it to a place like that is for them to assume the liability and responsibility of doing it right, and there's too many stories of them just canning the person that makes the mistake, or just outright disregarding their own mistakes. they get paid minimum wage to perform a simple task. i've learned a long time ago, if people get paid a minimum wage, expect a minimum result. the places foster a lack of care and respect, and focus on raw throughput instead of customer service. it's not a concept i can support.

subaru motors are extremely different in that they utilize a liquid sealant instead of a premade gasket in a lot of cases. this is an extreme departure from just about every other brand out there. but it is important to recognize that's how subaru has chosen to cut motor assembly costs.

every brand has their quirks. my brother hated working on maserati electrical issues because they randomly revised wire colors and pinouts throughout vehicle production. so the diagnostic manuals written at the beginning of production had only a vague location relevance by the end of production. i'm told mack trucks are even worse-- they use one wire color, and have terrible printing on them that wipes off on your fingers, the moment you touch them.

vw's have a weird/terrible fixation with 12+ point fasteners...

gm's have a fixation with using 6 of different bolt sizes to hold door panels together...

every brand has their quirks, it's just a little more apparent now with the brand mixing that needs to happen to bring lower production/lower revenue vehicles to market.

we're going to see the exact same problems with the supra in a couple years with the bmw/toyota people fighting over the best methods. germans are amazing engineers, but tend to over-engineer everything, where japanese engineers are all about distilling things down to the essential and efficient.

There are plenty of places that display worker certifications and pictures in the office. Most state-required inspection offices even require it. I personally believe it to be a difference in how we were brought up.

Japan's work-culture is far more focused than in the west.

The west tends to be focused on the individual worker (an improving their own standings/carreer) where Japan tends to focus on the group (improving as a unit.)

Compile that with stricter education, workplace and socialization guidelines, a less frequent revolving door of new employee's, and a more condensed populace helps raise the national bar.

I read that instruction all the way through. Enjoyed at the end of the instruction, you have to put sticker on. lol

it's a cultural thing. it won't happen because that culture doesn't exist here.

Back to this are we? Why do people think that techs only know the brand they currently work on? The whole idea they are confused by other brands is totally ludicrous. Many of them jump from brand to brand all the time. It isn't like they are born to one brand and that is all they ever know. Advanced training is all good but is meaningless if that person doesn't care about what he is doing. The training doesn't make them want to be a better tech they get the training because they actually care about what they are doing. The cause and effect are reversed from what you are saying

Well, then you are going to hate that they have a 15% off sale going on today with free shipping for orders over $75, and $6 something flat rate for orders under $75... Ok, I'm pretty sure that shipping is the normal deal. Also picked up a free hat and sticker, because free stuff!

Hence my shopping spree last night... It's ok if the wife said "yeah sure" right?

I think Ichi is saying that specifically in the Japanese culture, maintaining a (insert level of) technician rating is a greater source of pride for the techs than simply the promotion it gives you as an individual. As soundman said, it's a difference in culture.

As a side note, between Ichi having his connections and talking about Japanese culture a lot, I can't tell if he has actual Japanese heritage or is just the world's biggest weeb?

Motors come packaged differently but operate on the same principles. All they had to do was be more careful with the gasket sealer.

Going back to training vs instruction. If what you're saying, instruction was only thing needed to be a master tech just only need is care, then we don't need other ppl making/working on ANYTHING. That apply to EVERYTHING. Fine tuning Piano. Making katana or sword. Artist. Programmers & lists goes on. Even within that specific work/skill, not everyone have that set of skill by just reading the instruction. Example, not all artist can draw upside down art. Don't get me started on wiring. Even do care to learn about wiring (house or smaller things), I'll fucking explode whatever I'm wiring lol

My point is, instead of practicing on someone else's things that can explode, give them a practice place and parts that they can learn from. Even if they don't care, chances of them fucking it up is a less when they need to actually do it.
