Could be the way the 2020s were wired not utilizing the amp in the back but its own internal amp is insufficient to drive all the speakers properly. Not sure if anyone has swapped theirs out with a HU with a more powerful built in amp that can drive all the speakers. Not sure why they bothered leaving the amp in the 2020s when they were going to bypass it anyway

Here is a link to another post showing what happens if the 2020 models are using the same speakers and wiring as before but now putting the rear amp bypass jumper in place. If this is the case, it would put a 1 ohm load (effectively a short circuit) on the HU front speaker channels. If correct, this would not be a good thing.

Went for a cruise tonight. android auto cut off spontaneously. Gonna pull the passenger knee panel out and make sure the usb connection is securely plugged in. The cutting out seems to be a USB issue as phone stops showing charge indicator when AA got dc'd

I've had AA crashes and some spotty audio clipping.
To the best of my knowledge music audio is traversing the USB cable.
- this behavior seems to be mostly resolved with the last AA update and likely my music player app (PlayerPro) having better AA integration (larger buffer (maybe??)).
- I have not had ample chance to test AA recently (lock down and rain).

Sounds like typical AA experience. It’s always been buggier than I could stand. I’m sure it’ll get better over time but the fact that it’s allowed to be this crashy for so long is terrible, especially since phone integration is supposed to reduce driver distraction. This is one area where Android can’t touch IOS IMO.

question: for those who are getting these period AA disconnects, is your USB module in the car the old ones with AUX or the new ones with just USB? Really shouldn't matter but just curious if there any correlation

Also not a fan of the nav screen layout when you collapse the big search field on the left side. I wished they would center your location on the screen rather than to have it offset all the way onto the right. Originally was going to skip getting a phone mount for the car but with the buggy android auto crashing I think I may opt to still mount my phone at top of dash so its closer to eye level

Im gonna assume that it doesnt come with it from the factory, and its dealer isntalled as part of the PDI process.....

Only assuming that because of the installation instructions that got floated out there.....why would they need those instructions if it was installed from the factory?

You need a better cable. AA is very sensitive.

haha maybe it's worth losing android auto and finding a head unit from a salvaged '17-19 86 for better sound.

The Kenwood HU I have is 200mm and is virtually plug and play. There is no wiring or custom work needed. You just need to buy like two adapters, which are $10 each to attach to the stock USB and antenna. It is superior in probably every way.

Yes, and the stock headunit IS an aftermarket head unit. There is nothing proprietary about the head unit like an OEM MMI like Audi's MMI, where it has vehicle settings, vehicle information, climate controls, etc built into the headunit. Outside of the splash screen, and Subaru's Starlink, the headunit is off the shelf and could be adapted to any car.

So these third party head units are plug and play after buying crutchfield harnesses. Blue tooth functions based on its built in mic and don't need to attach the factory mic via wiring correct? You still retain bluetooth function?

I'm just wondering if getting a third party unit will actually utilize the factory amp in the trunk that powers the door speakers so they can be driven properly if you can confirm this is the case then I will definitely be shopping around for a new head unit in the future.

My Kenwood DDX919WS is 200mm and designed to be plug n play with Toyota and Subaru, so a Crutchfield harness is not needed. Again, the harness that is supplied plugs into the stock harness on the car. The unit has AA and ACP, and ACP works off Bluetooth; AA works off USB only; standard mp3 will work off Bluetooth. It has a mic that can be mounted anywhere and plugs into the back of the unit. It has voice activation. It is capacitive touch like standard phones, so it is responsive and smooth. It is HD resolution. It has attachments for three cameras via AV lines, and there is a proprietary plug for Kenwood dash cams. The Kenwood dash cam also does lane departure warning, crash warning and light delay warning. The unit can play CDs, which is nice, and DVDs (from Australia's time zone). The screen can tilt, custom EQ, bla bla bla. No regrets. The head unit works with the factory amp, and it worked with the OEM Audio Plus system I have.

Check my build for some pics and stuff.

wonder if it's possible to just change out the connectors for the stock mic with the ones for the aftermarket headunits so we don't have to install a second mic or mess with pulling down the roof liner to swap out the mic

Probably but the new mic is probably better. It comes with a gps antenna but you can use the old one. I used the new one, which is advised from the internet.
