According to the old Google:
The average full size sedan in 1990 was $9,000. Compact $6000. Miata $13,000 The average full size sedan in 1999 was $16,000. Compact car $12,500. Miata $20,000. Cheap compared to the big name sports cars maybe but not cheap compared to the average.

Average car in 1985 was $11,496. Base MR2 was $10,999 but there really were no "base models" sold at least in the US. They were closer to $12,000.

Had a pair of F-15's flyover earlier. Was going to try to grab a picture but realized it would be pointless.

I really shouldn't have said there were no "affordable" ones but more like they are just as affordable now as back then. If you adjust for inflation that affordable 1990 Miata costs about $1,000 less than one today. For that $1,000 more for the newest you get a whole pile more car. Sure the lower prices look great but the wages were at about the same level so in the long run it is a wash. Great to sit here and say "Oh those cars were half what they cost now" when the average income was only 40% of what it is now. You know what I mean better than many.
