Reminds me of the time one of the steers got barbed wire tangled around the hind foot just above the hoof. Its bleeding and obviously was hurting. Finally got it in a head gate. I am on my knees with a side cutter trying to cut the multiple strands off. I was glad I ended with no broken bones and both hands still attached. Buy the time he got through the bars on the head gate needed work.

Took this model for a spin...wasn't impressed with the fuel efficiency...it was just hungry, hungry...

She (a strong willed Portagee woman) said that she was tired of rounding up those damn animals, so she called a butcher and he came and took them away - they are now cut and wrapped in the local freezer.

Oh well, although we were going to wait till they were up to about 900 lbs., we now had several hundred pounds of corn fed beef in the freezer in Visalia. About once a month I would be over that way and bring a cooler full of beef back to San Jose.

THE END (of our cattle ranching days)

Great story... But I'm struggling with your association with 'cattle ranching" as it alludes to a profession having worked to codes/standards for such a profession.. I don't see that was the case.. so I would downgrade your aspirations to "trying" to be a 'cattle rancher'...

BTW, did you name your pets?

Well, you do have a point there -

Name the "pets"? Hell no! My buddy and his wife just told their kids that we sold the cows - they never did tell the kids that the beef they were eating was - "them".

Lol I had a friend that named her pig Bacon one year. Her sister named hers Sausage. They were very tasty. The pigs, not the girls.

Back in the day, my sister, who lived in California, had a pot bellied pig that got so fat that it couldn't hardly walk. My brother and I always wanted to have a pig roast - no, it didn't happen.

We were told by FFA never name the animals as it would be hard on the kids to eat them. Well my friend had to small children who insisted on naming them--- like PATTYmelt and CHUCKroast. Right then they knew there was no problem with them eating the meat.
