And I met a quite a few people I would genuinely describe as brilliant. Having worked with other engineers from all different kinds of colleges, I can assure you that there is an even distribution of intelligence among them. Anyone who thinks they are a "better" engineer because of the name of the school they went to is just elitist.

I agree. You are taking my words the wrong way. But that is okay. You should try your argument with a hiring manager. I will be there to support. Many hiring managers do not even consider looking deeper than the school. Because that is the easiest quality for defending their decision to HR. That is not a good thing, just an observation.

It is VERY possible to get an undergrad school from some of the best in-state schools in the country, and cash flow it as a student. You just have to be willing to work your ass off, and not use student loans to fund lifestyle. It may take you longer than four years, and it may not be a lot of fun, but it can be done.

Of course, a little help from parents that did a little future planning, or a state that has some type of "Hope Scholarship" funding helps.

You are right though, college isn't for everyone. Of my 3 sons, two graduated college, one didn't. The one that didn't found his own way and is doing well.
Well, yes, or it used to be, back in the 60's, for me at least.

I have two younger brothers and a younger sister. None of them finished college, except me. We are all now retired. Now, they are all worth more than I am. Go figure -

my sister insisted on going to college, in large part "because all her friends were going". she majored in art-something. my parents called it an MRS degree. they convinced her to at least minor marketing-something for at least a marginal chance of having something useful afterwards.

what i quoted ran through my head multiple times during her graduation. the way colleges beat into graduates that THEY'RE SPECIAL, that THEY'RE BETTER, that THERE'S NO ONE LIKE THEM (despite the fact that no one in room had paid less than $40k/year to get that paper). it really floored me. if i managed to convince people any of that, while they gave me $5,000, they'd call me a cult leader.

Being in IT is just a status label right now. IT is so broad you can have people who install software on your computer (incorrectly I might add) and think they are some sort of genius, "ahem, I work in IT!".. or you have those who are truly intelligent, but so much so they lack in social skills and are next to rock like emotionally and love throwing assburgers at people.

I look at it like back when working at a factory was seen as you made it and your life was set, the reality couldn't be more false.

People are so brainwashed right now by higher education. I've met so many people who think they are higher than you just because of the 'level' of education they are enrolled in, yet, the courses content is square block in square hole.

Nothing makes me more sick than to talk to a 'University' student that knows everything, but doesn't know how to wash some dishes or cook for themselves.

Did you know you can get a bachelor's degree from Ireland in a single year (2 semesters, 28 weeks~)? Like what kind of degree is that, a degree proving you're that dumb to pay Ireland international fees for something that will never help you in your professional life?

no different than a lot of other specialty trades. "electrician" can cover anything from working on a pole, to installing electrical cable on a mobile home assembly line, to warming chairs in a union hall

Main difference between electrician and hurrdurr IT in current timeline though, is that everyone wants to be in one of them, but not the other.

Hell if I could be the cafeteria lady at Google I sure as hell would, and then I'd tell an incomplete truth to everyone and say I work at Google.

My wife majored in photography and communications and now makes 6 figures at a tech company..the difference is she didn't expect her degree to do it all for her, she's great with making connections and friends. The degree isn't a free pass to a great job, it's merely a requirement on a bullet point list, that's why people get these fairly useless degrees.

Just to through out a red herring. I ran an R+D department. It was extremely hard to figure out witch applying engineer was really going to be good at what in the interview. I will say that the lab experience and Math levels were generally better from the high end schools like MIT and Cal Tech. But, many of the brightest had passed school and flunked life and were not good with teams.
