You are just comparing a brand new car with a worn-out old car. If you have a good service/tune-up on the engine, replace the shocks and springs, replace tires and brakes, it will drive the same. But the old car will still not smell and look new inside and out.

Plus, the gearing on 2017+ is not even desirable for me. I would switch back to 4.1 again since I would go FI anyway.

That's what I wanted to think too, but it's not what my driving experience left me believing. I loved every second of ownership of my 1st car, I bought it Oct 2012 and racked up over 156k+ miles, did all the maintenance, tuning, re-tuning, replaced parts whether for wear, or aftermarket improvement; but the reality is this car was tweaked by toyota/subaru for 8 years and what is offered now in 2020 is better then what they offered to start. I had driven a 2016 previously and seen the 2017+ in person plenty of times and didn't think there was much reason to swap but after actually getting seat time in a 2020 the difference was noticeable, and its not just from being new vs worn out. TS vs Limited (modded) or not could play a role too but there was no doubt to me the new car was built better then my old one.

On the Highway on cruze I got 33MPG avr as well
at a confortable speed that got me no tickets.

When I got off the cruze for some entertainment it drops to 28MPG.

As for the high rev at cruzing speed, this was not bothersome compared to a past B16 honda..

That EPA number is just a refence...

I think Subaru went in the right direction with the 2017+ models, especially in performance pack trim. The 4.3 FD, upgraded Brembo brakes, revised damping, and improved intake/exhaust are all changes I would make (and did make, other than the FD) to my 2013 FR-S. Even non-mechanical, small touches like the digital gauge that can show oil temp are welcome. It's a bunch of small changes, but I would imagine add up to a noticeably different driving experience.

The only thing I wish they addressed was the weight. The base FR-S was 2758 lbs, BRZ w/PP is 2813 lbs, and the TS is 2842 lbs. Would love to have seen Subaru release a lightweight, track-focused version of the BRZ. Something like 2650 lbs, radio/AC delete optional, and lightweight FW. Hell maybe throw in a clutch-type LSD and 220 hp/8000 RPM redline. Would have lost money on each one but would have been a nice gesture to the fans. That's a car I could see myself trading in for.

In my opinion, they killed the car for that throttle response effect. Can't you just swap with an AT differential? Used AT differentials should be cheap on ebay. I would do that immediately.

Well I switched my speedo over to MPH and my mental metric to imperial conversion was off!
My normal speed of 120 to 125 KPH is actually 75 to 77 MPH. Now, that doesn't change the fact that I have lost about 4 MPG but does clear up the confusion I caused by under stating my speed.

MPGs Were not my priority when I bought it, just a bonus for when you got to make those long runs... I already have a shitbox that can do a 44MPG.

Yea, I do very little city driving and when I do its usually a small part of a full tank (I rarely fill up above a 1/4 tank)

Fuel economy wasn't even a thought when I was shopping for a car and picked this one it was just an unexpected side effect. (I had everything from the FRS to a ZL1 Camaro to a Corvette to a CTS-V Wagon on my list and several other cars and trucks in-between).

It just happens that 90% of my driving falls between 45 and 65MPH with relatively few stops which seems to be the car's sweet spot.

Out of 479 fillups, I've only had 8 that were below 30MPG. The lowest was 27.6 and that one involved being stuck in stop and go traffic for over 90 minutes on a road trip.
