As far as answering this question, i didnt notice any detrimental effects from that tire size. It honestly feels really solid and planted i like the feel. I may try out a 225/45/17 after these tires wear out... |

Generally speaking with a 17x8 wheel a 245 will be a little faster then a 225 around a track. But a 225 might “feel” better to most drivers even if technically its slower.
With that said you would also need to look at the specific tire as some brands 225s are wider then other brands 245s, or vice versa If its a specific tire that runs narrow, normal, or wide. |

Tests I've seen in the past from Andy Hollis have shown that matching tread width to wheel width is a good rule of thumb. The wider tire isn't effectively used on a narrow wheel as the sidewalls are "pinched".

Not all tires are the same width as well. So some 225’s may run as wide as a 245. I know the PS4S and indy 500 for instance are on the narrower side and those in 245 have the same tread width as an RS4 or RSRR in 225.

I run 235/40 on a 17x8 wheel for the past few seasons and feel it's a really nice middle ground. Steering feel is (generally speaking) better than a 245 and more grip than a 225.
I do not believe that the RE71R comes in that size though. But if you're not totally set on that exact tire, this could be a really good option. |

My track setup is 17x9 with 255 RS4's all around. The wheels are +40 and I have 3mm spacers installed up front. I have camber plates and both top and bottom camber bolts with stock struts and springs. Maxed the plates out to give the most clearance between the fender and the springs then dialed it in at -3* camber using the bolts.
I didn't see or hear any signs of rubbing but I only got 3-4 laps in before my motor went. (stupid '13 ) My previous car I ran 255 RE71R's on an 8.5" wheel. The tires were definitely pinched and I wouldn't recommend it so I definitely wouldn't recommend a 245 on an 8" wheel either. |
