I don't like OTA updates, only because you can't control them. If a manufacturer can change the product they sold me at a whim, then I really don't own the product.

I just haven't seen an EV I'm in love with yet, and I'm not much into the hybrid thing. I sort of like the Volt model, but not the actual platform. We're past that as a choice at this point though.

It will be interesting to see what GM/Honda do on their joint venture.

OTA updates are something I have come to accept and appreciate with my Mac products. As a person who use to jailbreak their iPhone, it is a bummer I can't customize my phone while receiving updates, but it is what it is. I want the updates and security.

Compared to the iPhone, android phones just don't get the same support over the years. For cars, it is even worse, so I would look forward to these things.

Tesla does a lot of updates, and they are super valuable. Sentry mode was an update. Better range from increased battery efficiency. Autopilot updates. Performance updates.

Yea, but there is the other list of updates:

Junk game updates
You didn't pay for that feature so we're turning it off updates.
You have hardware in your car you can't use unless you pay us mo' money updates.

I'm all for OTA, I just want to be able to select anything that isn't a specific recall function. Even then, with ICE I have the option not to do it.

Junk games? Worried about hard drive space? Lol

Those other things seem fine to me. In fact, I prefer to have the option to add features in the future instead of having to buy the trim that only came with them and stop paying for anything I don’t want.

Not worried about disk space...just don't need the crap in my car.

The problem with the features is that means the HARDWARE is in the base car and it inflates the price. If I never intend to want an autonomous car I shouldn't have to pay for the equipment required to run it. It would be like GM putting an LS in your car and only running it on 4 cylinders, then offering to let you turn the other 4 on at some point. Someone had to pay for it.

essential phones did.

at least until they went under just recently.

i would have stood in line for their 2nd gen phone if they had released it. and i've never stood in line for any shiny new product release.

Wouldn't that also imply that they inflated the resale price, meaning, isn't that value for resale like you could say, I didn't get autopilot, but if you buy the car you can add it? Similar options would be like OnStar or XMRadio.

Tesla is using the autopilot system, even if the user isn't using it.

I suppose except OnStar or XMRadio add probably $100 at most to the cost of the vehicle. Not in the same league as the cost of the equipment for the option to have full phase 5 autopilot.

Yeah, I don’t know what the cameras and CPU costs. It has to be at least a few thousand.

Yea, it's hard to say because it's more than just the raw equipment costs. The cost for developing Autopilot will be spread across all cars, not just the ones that have it fully activated.

I suppose we could guess it is no more than $3,000 since that is the amount Tesla added to the price of a Model 3 when they annouced it would be on all cars rather than an option.

That is also sort of my point on the "blingy" things they add to the software. Yes, some of it is cute, and maybe even useful, but there was development time and cost in all that that could have been directed at the core functions of the car, or even helped lower the cost of the car.

In the end I suppose that is no different than any other manufacturer though. The design cost for the C8 was spread by GM over their entire product line, which is why they can price it the way they do.

When GM and Toyota have many EV's on the lot you can buy now, and Tesla still has a waiting list to get a product that might still have flaws at the delivery, or a new product with any untold number of massive issues like the roof leaking, the door handles not working etc, Tesla will be relegated to being a niche automaker, like Bentley is now. They will still sell cars, but only to their specific fan base. Exactly as it is now.

You can choose to ignore Telsa's vast quality problems, and Tesla can refuse to acknowledge them, but normal people see the proof and want no part of that crap. They cannot even make a car that an auto journalist orders perfect. How stupid can a company be?

Panel gaps. How old is GM as a company? How expensive is the C8?
