A few more photos showing how the color changes a little bit in different light. It's got a bit of blue in it in direct sunlight, and it becomes more green and darker during sunset/sunrise and as light decreases.

Too late. It melted already. The snow not the car.

It is far far worse than the one in my 14 but with Apple car play! I have no clue why but they bypass the amp for the door subs and they are just powered by the HU so are barely "speakers". There is no bass even at the highest setting and the hands free phone that goes through the door speakers is impossible to hear even at the highest volume. It is something I will eventually have to deal with.

Tcoat,

What do you suppose would happen if we "unbypassed" the amp and put the fuse back in? Nothing, blow the speakers, blow up something else?

the speakers don't work. there was just a massive thread about exactly this.

from the factory, the amp is connected like any other 86, and then the dealers are given specific instructions to install the jumper, and pull the amp fuse, among other things as part of the standard dealer prep. the thread ended up going over the process that the dealers were supposed to do that they didn't.

the hakone edition comes with a different radio that doesn't output the signal that the amp is looking for, so the amp just doesn't work. i'm not clear on weather it's not turning the amp on, or if they switched line level for speaker level outputs, but no matter the case, there's no audio output from the speakers.

There is no way to hook up to the amp with the stock clips.

The speakers work but they are just not powered enough to actually work as woofers. They are just under powered speakers with all the nice tin can effect you would expect.

Yeah I know all of this. I was the OP for that thread.

My question was whether one "could" get the amp to work. The DC power plug does not go through the radio and should work, and the speaker input/output is the same. The issue is the line to "turn the amp on" (I think). Could it somehow be hooked to a switch? Is it just a +12V signal? If so, hooking it to a switched circuit off of the ignition ought to do the job. Maybe off the 12V plug in the center console? One could hook up an "amp on" switch?

Keep in mind that there is no way the speakers could have worked as delivered because the amp fuse was pulled by the installer (at the port I think) before we got our cars. Toyota just failed to install the speaker loopback connectors which was a 30 second job once we knew what to do.

Just pick a head unit with CarPlay at crutchfield and pay 25 bucks for the wiring harness. Took me 1.5 hours to install and that was because I had to flash one of the connections for the BRZ. I have the same head unit in my BRZ and WRX. Took me 40 min to install in the WRX.

Mine was all plugged in properly so the door speakers did indeed "work". If you want to call the noise coming out of them as "working" that is.
I like to set the sound more to the rear but it appears that the door speakers are directly wired into the dash lines so if I fade to the rear then they disappear completely. Since the phone only works through the door speakers I have to crank the volume to 30 and even then can hardly hear what is being said. My 14 with the old head unit that uses the amp had none of these concerns and actually sounded pretty good.
This is my only disappointment with this car since I had better sound out of the single paper cone dash mounted speaker and AM radio in my 58 Chevy!

Maybe there is a way to repin the connectors?

I have the same issue with my 17 head unit. I changed the sound profile to the Toyota "IM" which sort of helped with how dead they sound.

I've seen the door soundproofing thread, maybe I'll give that a go before I decide to change the speakers. Seems like the headunit is pretty terrible, that will be the first change.

FFS!! I enter this post thinking I'll see photos.. but all I get is words.. I think the title of the thread should be changed as it's currently selling itself.. change to "Yawn, big YAWN, no photos of Hakone here, move on nothing to see but boring words."

You hadn't installed one rear speaker with a reverberator?
