But it is very promising the performance gains with only 4psi boost, either that is a very efficient turbo/intercooler or its the boxers high compression ratio?

IMHO this is similar to the 90's, back then any quality engine management upgrade either to the stock ecu or standalone was a very expensive endeavor with very few knowledgeable folks who could tune a turbo fuel injected engine, most couldn't change the timing at all, this new DI learning curve and the single source supplier is a bit like re-living that.

If the FR-S continues to sell, there will be more competition on the tuning end and more balanced to daily driver turbo kits.

I think a lot reading this thread want a modest boost in horsepower and torque not a dragster, JMHO.

I'll rebuttle this later when I have time to sit down. I'll explain why we are using what we are using. Comparing the parts I used to the parts in the Flyinn' Miata Kit is not the same! Our hard parts alone are considerably more expensive by atleast 1k.

Double check on what they offer nowadays as well. The kits are more like 3.5k and all the piping is silicone.

The disco potato will support around 340whp when pushed to the limits on the .86ar housing. The smooth stainless housing will help a bit in reaching that goal. I don't see this car hitting that number without a compression ratio drop to help manage cylinder pressures a bit better though.

I can see 300whp coming though. Should make it there on 10-12psi. But stock internals will be put to question in this range of boost as well. 8psi may very well be the limit, but we won't know for a little while.

This setup seems well-thought. Room to grow. The disco is the best street turbo for a 2.0. They are really responsive and make great power. Next step up imho is the GT3071r.

If the disco potato can already put out more than this motor can safely handle then I'm guessing that a 3071 would be complete overkill for the stock block...probably doable on a built motor though.

What about smaller turbos like the 26xx series?

they are already making great numbers on this turbo with only 4psi adding the amazing gulp of power down low in the RPM range they are able to make. yea a smaller turbo would give you even quicker spool at an even lower RPM range but to make the same power this turbo currently makes with a smaller turbo you would need more boost and more boost creates more heat. yea you have an intercooler to help but now the system has to work that much harder to keep everything efficient. and another key factor is how high this engine is able to rev, the smaller turbo might not have enough flow to keep that power strong toward redline, it would die off in power prematurely =) plus you always wanna make boost as efficiently as possible which is why turbo selection for your application is most important and i think this turbo is the perfect size for this motor and the boost they are going toward.

1. Basic Flyin' miata kits use cast manis
2. Don doesn't plan on this being a 4 psi kit, he is aiming for final numbers at 6-8psi
3. Miatas have a lot higher production number therefor a lot more sales in the aftermarket industry. Flyin' Miata didn't even come around until there were 1m+ miatas on the road

I can probably speak for a lot of people when I say I'd rather spend more money up front on good, quality, reliable parts instead of cheaper one that will save me money upfront, but just cost me more in the long run (time & money). Also, Don has put a lot of time, effort and money into this so he deserves to be paid.

I deal with this everyday for the last 10 + years when people compare buying a Corolla/Camry to Focus/Fusion or Cobalt/Cruze/Malibu, etc. Like the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for."

To me, I think this kit would be perfect. I'm not looking for crazy power. 250whp would be such a blast in this car! I mean, look how much fun this car is putting down 160-170whp?!? I/H/E/Turbo & Tune and I'm set!

I wish I had the money to jump on this right away, but I spent a lot on my trail rig and still haven't installed those parts yet so I need to get one project finished first.
