Not much of a dilemma for me, if your ultimate goal is to get into IT. Take the IT related job. It will benefit you more in the long run, and it's ALWAYS easier to get your second job than your first in a field like IT.

Right now, there are two jobs that are available to me: the first job is as a tech support representative for a company that makes screens, and the second one will put me behind the counter of... let's say a to-go version of a restaurant.

The first one is a 15 mile drive and around 30-40 minutes to get to, but is at least related to the IT field. I've also been told that there is plenty of downtime, enough to do whatever (in my case, study for exams). I also get health insurance as well.

Insurance is a huge plus, and anytime you can learn or advance on the company dime, be it directly or indirectly is a big bonus.

The second one is much closer to me, about a 3 mile drive (less on gas), and will pay me slightly more, but is not at all related to the IT field and is much more strenous in nature and benefits aren't available until probably 6 months down the line.

My family is telling me to go for the second job for its proximity to me, but I want the first job since I feel it will be the job that will get me into the IT industry and allow me to gain experience to move up. I can't see myself growing in the food industry. I'm treating this situation like buying a part for my car: I want to know I'm getting the best.

What a dilemma to be in, but at the same time, it's such a wonderful feeling knowing I've been doing things right to even be put in this spot to begin with.

So guys, old and new, have you been put in a similar situation? What did you do, and what advice do you have for me? Should I take Job 1 or Job 2?
I once commuted 75 miles each way soending 2-2.5hrs in traffic on minimum wage for 12 months. It got me to my next job which got me to where I am.

Take the IT job.

Sorry old man but you are wrong! What you are showing is a wagon wheel assembly. It consists of a center hub, spokes, rim and outer banding.

Now, who can tell what these are?

Job #1. Sounds like that's the one you actually want, and therefore the one you are willing to get up 20 minutes earlier in the morning for. If it's not worth that 20 minutes, don't do it. Don't settle and think what could have been, when you have the ability to make it a reality.

Wow, holy shit. I expected a little more resistance to the idea (like the noob threads with terribly bad ideas that are seeking validation instead of reality). Then in that case, I'm going with Job 1.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm looking forward to my future.

Good choice.

Yes, makes lots of money, so as you can pay into social security, so as I can continue to draw it out. SOMEBODY gave away all the money I paid into MY SS for over 50 years -
