Hmm, I guess to each his own but a real sports car doesn't need those things.
Also, if you read about the R-Spec, it says they're trying to do away with the amenities that aren't needed in order to cut some weight. Granted, there are a few things they could still cut out but it's a good start. I've seen some modded Genesis's and they look downright awesome. That thing's ready for the track right off the showroom floor. Gets a thumbs up in my book.

I didn't buy my S new but still got screwed on how much I paid for it. It wasn't near the 23k price though.

just seems like ditching amenities is a too-little-too-late effort to make the car lighter. -Mike

The curb weight for the 2.0t base is 3294lbs and the 2.0T Track model is 3362lbs. During a recent Web event with the U.S. poduct manager for Hyundai we were told the R-Spec will weigh in around the same as the base 2.0T model. Yeah it is still heavy....I would have liked to see them drop 200lbs more and get the car near 3000lbs. But what do you expect the car is based off a large luxury sedan platform? It's not like they were going to be able to turn the Genesis sedan into a miata sized coupe. Last edited by zigzagz94; 11-01-2009 at 05:48 PM. Reason: added link to hyundai |

to be honest, i think you'd save money by getting a base genesis and doing it all aftermarket (assuming that's a possibility). turbo charging a 2.0L engine to 210 hp is lackluster at best, definitely disappointing on such a heavy car-- but they have to be able to meet warranty requirements for all types of drivers i guess. if I were into the genesis i'd just jump for the base v6 and work from there.
thankfully i'm not

Just another thing about the curb weight of the genesis coupe R-spec.
To put it into perspective a 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx had a curb weight of 3270lbs and 210hp... almost exactly the same as the R-spec. Of course the gsx had a heavy awd system but it was also a lot smaller than a R-spec. Everyone loved the GSX and now 10 years later Hyundai is able to release a car with similar numbers (and probably the same type of moddability) despite all the mandatory heavy safety features of modern cars; and people still rag on the genesis coupe. I think a lot of it has to do with badge snobbery and not the actual car itself. And the GSX cost $27k in 1999 where as the R-spec is only $24k. |

anyway, back to the topic, i sincerely hope that Toyota/Subaru can keep the weight of the FT86 to a minimum, 2700 or under. that would give it roughly a 600 pound advantage over the genesis. ![]() -Mike

Well...If mazda stays true to their target weight the next-gen miata will have a 500 pound advantage over the FT.

Buy a hard top...It'll probably add a maximum of 50 pounds.
