Yep. A great deal depends upon the breed of dog but the average seven to one factor has been common knowledge for centuries. Not sure why people here are confused by that simple fact.

Apparently this dog lived to 30. I didn’t read the article, but I’m assuming this dog lived its life without the use of medications, heart bypass surgery or any interventions that humans use to extend their lives. Using the dog years rule, that dog made it to 210.

In domestic dogs, sexual maturity (puberty) occurs between the ages of 6 to 12 months for both males and females, although this can be delayed until up to two years of age for some large breeds.

In human years that would be equivalent to 3.5-7 years old—following the rule of 7.

So yea, I never understood the rule of seven.

That's very,very unusual. A dog living to even half that is rare in my experience. I'm also guessing there is no way he lived to that age without some medical assistance. All those things you listed your vet will be happy to do for you if you are stupid enough to pay for it.

My father-in-law had a poodle that lived to 18, but he also spent (literally) $15,000 over 6 years to get him from 12 to 18.

I'm not saying the seven thing is accurate, or I even agree with it, its just the reason for the rule of thumb.

That’s true. People can spend a fortune to keep their pets alive.

I work in the ER. Most people who survived past 18 would not make it to, or much further than, 50. Assuming we “put a human down” like we “put a dog down” when they have medical complications then the average age of natural death would be like 45-50 for the vast majority of people. Natural deaths would be deaths due to sickness or disease, whether chronic or acute, but not secondary to trauma or directly due to trauma. Considering that fact, I always thought the “dog years” metric was off.
