I think one of the big reasons there is a perception of unreliability is because often the people who buy these cars only want to lease them or drive them for a few years, then trade up into a new model. Then it turns into a series of serial secondhand ownership and deferred maintanance. No one wants to do the big services. So the cars get bought and sold over and over again and everyone tries to defer maintenance to the next owner.
Yeah that's a good point. All of the cars I referenced were bought new and properly maintained, so that may have had something to do with it.

I'll also add that while German cars appear to be less reliable than the reliable Japanese brands, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one new. Overall reliability in the industry has risen to the point where the new car warranty is all you really need.

I did not watch the video but I will answer the question from my perspective. My experience with German cars has been that they have not been epecially unreliable. However, when something breaks or wears out it is expensive to fix or replace. The cars are also, in my experience, a nightmare to work on compared to the Japanese and American brands I have owned. I have owned 53 cars in my lifetime.

Having said that, one of the most reliable and easy to work on cars I ever owned was German made. It was a 1969 Opel Cadet wagon which I bought used and I drove it daily on a 82 mile long rural mail route, delivering mail to 553 residences for years. The round trip to work was also 50 miles a day. It was still running strong when the fenders rusted off of it. The odometer showed almost 200K miles when I finally retired it.

The more modern German cars I have owned have not been as reliable nor anywhere near as durable. I have, as a result, sworn off of German cars.

Without clicking the link, im pretty sure it goes like this:

1.) Ask the question at the beginning of vid. (are german cars unreliable?)
2.) ramble about some sponsorship stuff and remember to hit that subscribe/like button!!!
3.) tell a story about how he got into car modding, his car history, etc, basically anything to add 15+ mins of random content without actually talking about the subject at hand.
4.) End the vid with some passing remark about the topic at hand (german car reliablilty) without providing anything of value or just not answering the actual topic the vid is supposed to be about.
5.) profit!

In Germany the cars are completely reliable and dirt cheap to maintain and repair. Mercedes and BMWs are high mileage police cars and taxis.
It is just over here where they are expensive to maintain so get the reputation of being less reliable.

Hauntingly accurate! I regrettably did watch the video, and your #4 sums it up perfectly.

Yep.
You do not want to know how much they wanted for a tune up on a 76 Trans Am in 77!

It is all in perspective really.
