Also found out my POS hot tub is from 1988. Amazing it still works at all.

Close. It is clean, but missing jets, leaks like a sieve, and the control panel often has a mind of its own. When I few out to check out the house in April I had a laugh when I checked out the tub and told my realtor "this is not an asset".

Was supposed to have a phone technical interview this morning (programming problem over the phone) with a new company, but had to cancel about 5 mins in to the guy intro'ing himself because my stomach started feeling like crap plus bad acid reflux.

So embarrassing :\

That said I have done something similar where habits overtake reality.

One place I worked I was doing 12 hour shifts Fri/Sat/Sun. Within walking distance of the building were several decent places to eat so I would usually just walk out and get lunch.

On 4 separate occasions over the 3 year period I did this, I would have to run an errand at lunch, drive to that errand, then on the way back stop to get lunch at one of my usual haunts. After finishing lunch I would walk back to work, only to realize later my car was still in the restaurant's parking lot.

It's always interesting to learn about homes and what different owners have done since the places were originally built.

For instance, the current home my parents have originally had a very long, one car width garage. Some owner since it was built cut out about a third of the garage in back and turned it into a bedroom/office with separate additional bathroom. The 'third floor' is sort of like a half-level, and wasn't there when the house was originally built, but now has the actual master bedroom and separate bath.

When the house was originally built, the room that is mine there was the "master bedroom", but the bathroom was the common second floor bathroom and I just had a separate personal doorway directly to it through my small walk-in closet.

Plus the kitchen has been re-done since it was originally built too. The floor between the (open) kitchen and dining table area is slightly off-level, so people always need to learn to watch their step entering the kitchen so they don't trip, lol. Maybe because of the new tile flooring that was put in when the kitchen was renovated...

I think our guess is that the house was originally 2bed, 1 bath lol. But now it's roughly "4" bedroom, 3 bath.

Yea, my last house in San Jose was added on to twice by previous owners. One didn't get final inspection sign off. Was a major pain and expense getting it cleaned up with the city before selling.

Lol, my 4 normal alarms are only about 60% effective. If there is something I really need to get up for, I need to set a bunch more.

It's very subjective based on the interviewer.

Usually I want the candidate to have a solid handle on the traditional data structures: arrays (bunch of kinds), some trees but not the super complex annoying self-balancing kinds, linked lists, stacks, queues, and my personal favorite: hash tables (naming is in different flavors depending on the language).

Algorithms themselves I don't expect interviewees to have memorized at all because I know I'm horrible at rote memorization. I try to provide a computer for basic doc searching if needed.

I'd say the biggest thing on top of those is being willing to question and talk through the problem. I understand being silent while working but try to speak up a bit now and then, even if you're struggling.

Note: I have a hard time with this too when interviewing but for me as the interviewer it's brownie points if you speak up; most other interviewers in the industry just hate awkward silences and they'll say "speaking up to explain your thought process is "important"", but in many cases they don't really care because you can explain as much as you want of what you're thinking, but if you're wrong they'll just mark you as wrong anyway regardless of if you spoke out loud.

Try to be personable if possible. Ask for help when needed, but hopefully not for the whole thing . And just be willing to learn! If you have less experience, then an appetite for asking questions to learn more is great.

The biggest thing I can recommend: join clubs and orgs where you'll get a chance to meet new people and have conversations. It's a plus if these have moments where you'll get to standup in front of a bunch of people and give a speech, even if it's impromptu. Something like a local "Toastmasters" group is a great start.

Hope that's helpful!

This gives me hope to be completely honest. I'm way more personable and extroverted than most of my other peers in this stream of study. Love public speaking and am actually quite good at it. Guess all thats left to do now is bust my ass in school and learn all the material I need to be successful. Thanks for your help. Didn't expect to have such nice conversations on a forum site but I'm definitely here to stay now that I have.
