When I said 10 years to move up I didn't necessarily mean doing one job all that time. It isn't unrealistic in some fields though. Did you start out and expect to be the chief pilot of some major airline within a year? Does it not take about 10 years to move up the ladder in your job?

To be PIC in a jet, yes is a 10 year road probably, but there are lots of steps in between. (All that included pay raises)

Chicken. Parm. Sub. At my last job there was Trina, who turned chicken tenders and budget marinara into something really special. Idk how, but it was goooood.

Not a great sign when boarding is held for "the pilot called in a maintenance crew, and we'll get back to you when we know more"

Yeah you might get a different airplane unless it's a quick fix.

Opportunity also depends on the size of the company as well. I counsel people on this all the time here. I've worked for companies that had larger IT staffs than the entire hospital system I work at now ( about 3,500 employees).

In IT here, the "line worker" is only five levels down from the CEO. Most positions do have levels (so a SysAdmin position has a I, II, and III position) so there is that movement.

But the bottom line is if you want to make a huge career jump quickly the likely place to get that is out not up. I'm very straight forward about that and have helped persons looking for that next level to look outside.

It is all those steps and incremental pay raises that so many people would like to skip. That is what I was talking about.

Sometimes we just need to be content where we're at for awhile. Money can be elusive when sought after. Just like women lol. Of course contentment would kill off industries, the auto aftermarket being one.
