Airplane story was great. Is there time for a dentist story?

Yes there was I parked the car, and see what the dogs done to my car. I usually try my best to protect it, I park it most far places to protect it from other cars' careless doors. Anyway, I felt bad when I see the scratch. However, the pizza was smelling very nice, and I had the "Dirty Harry" movie waiting for me inside. So the "bad feeling" lasted about 15 seconds

Well, I have two dentist stories that come to mind.

I'll tell the Army dentist story.

It was a slow day in Coleman Barracks in Germany, so I thought I'd go over and get my teeth checked. Well, this Captain sat me down in his "torture" chair and was checking out my teeth, bitching about having to be in the Army when he could be making a killing on the outside.

After a few X-rays, he mentioned that I had four impacted wisdom teeth. He said he was having a slow day and told me how much he would have to charge if he did it as a civilian dentist. Which I didn't give a shit about. However, he did convince me to allow him to extract two of them.

So, after he numbed be from the waste up, he started in. Chopping away. Then he discovered that the roots were grown into my jaw bones, like sort of "hooked" in. OK, more novocain. After, what seemed like hours, this LTC came in and asked him what was taking so damn long!

The Captain tried to explain, the LTC took a look in my bloody mouth and told the Captain to go over to a cabinet and fetch him what looked like a large pair of ugly pliers used in mid-evil torture. I balked when he started in with those and he told me that I was an officer and to quit whimpering, as he stuck his knee against my chest to gain leverage.

After several loud crunches, they both came out - in pieces. He told the Captain to button me up and send me back to my quarters along with a pocket full of codeine.

So, I drove about 25 kms to my apartment, had about a half bottle of whisky (to kill the pain and help prevent infection - ). Well, that wasn't getten it after the novocane wore off, so I took some more codeine. That's when the bleeding started that I couldn't stop. So, I called Doc Nauret (the Battalion Surgeon and my friend) and he told me to take some more codeine, which I did, and stick a sock in my mouth.

Along about 0200 hrs, I was afraid I was going to bleed to death, so my wife drove me into the emergency room of the Heidelberg hospital (about 40 kms away). When I arrived they looked in my mouth and asked who butchered me? They said that I had two dry sockets, so they packed them, gave me some more codeine and sent me on my way with another pocked full of codeine.

Well, my wife got me home and I pretty much passed out, with a sock in my mouth. Yes, I recovered, no I didn't go on duty the next day.

THE END

Speaking of airplane stories, sort of...

This past weekend I went to the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association) regional fly-in in Tullahoma, TN. They had a quite a few good free seminars, a good vendor mall and lots of nice (and some "you actually flew that here?") planes to look at.

Anyways, one of the seminars I went to was "How healthy is your engine?". If you think the valve spring story here is "scary" you should attend a seminar where they explain how your 1940's technology aircraft engine is looking for a way to kill you at 5,000ft. Lots of photos of burnt valves, cracked valves, broken valves, inside of the engines.

Of course, real danger is rare and is usually caught early since aircraft engines have to minimally go through an annual inspection, but it made me a little glad the weather had been bad that day so I drove there rather than flew.

There was supposed to be a B-17 coming for the show here but it developed engine problems and turned back to an airport with better repair facilities. The town it was over when it turned back was New Hamburg. I loved the irony of that location.

It was an overcast day when we took off from Tacoma Narrows airport in a Cessna 172' piloted by an old retired air force LTC pilot type. I was flying right seat. Yep, if that old coot would happen to croak, I (not those two troops of mine in the back) was going to attempt to land it. So, we set a course for Eastern Washington to do some aerial imaging of some potato fields.

Now, to get there, we had to fly through (over) the Yakima Firing Range, which was also a flight training area for F-16 fighters. So, the pilot told me that we had exactly a one hour window to cross the range (of about 250,000 acres).

Also it was most important to maintain an altitude of at least 10,000 feet but no higher than 15,000 feet. Of course I asked why? He said that if we dropped below 10,000 feet there was a chance that an artillery shell could shoot us down. If we ventured above 15,000 feet, we would be in the air space of the F-16s and they could knock us out of the sky. He said "keep your eyes pealed". I said for WHAT - exploding artillery shells or fucking jet fighters coming at us at 10,000 MPH! -

Well, we made it across and did our imaging thing. The pilot said for the return trip we are going back a different way because we didn't have a window for that day. I said, with a sigh of relief, "GOOD". How are we going back? He said we were going to follow the Columbia River Gorge to Western Washington.

That gorge is one of the windiest places on the planet and the rock walls of the gorge are very steep and hard. However, I figured we would be better off crashing in a large river that getting shot down or blown out of the sky.

Well, we made it safely back to Tacoma.

THE END

So... Did you also get oxygen in that little plane along with 4 dudes and survey equipment? Because isn't 10,000ft kinda pushing it for oxygen levels? And the 172 isn't exactly a high performance aircraft so I wouldn't have expected it to do 10kft at max capacity. Very strange.

That is ironic!

There was B-25 at the show I was at and you could buy a ride in it. I was tempted but it was almost $500 per seat! Too rich for my blood.

Oxygen is required for crew at 12,500 MSL (mean sea level) and 15,000 for passengers. Ceiling for a C172 is 13,500 MSL.

That same B-25 flew over me at our one plant a couple of years ago. The plant is directly in line with, and about a 1/4 mile from the end of the runway. I doubt the thing was more than 50 feet above our roof.

The same B25 visited the airport at my college along with a P51. I didn't get to go in it, but a few of my friends did.
