I'm the wrong person to be talking about this in any depth though, as weight has zero impact on me from a car prospective. As long as it can handle itself and has decent performance specs, weight is the last thing. Heck I could stand to shed 50lbs myself!

Can the transmission and clutch *really* weigh that much?! The Tremec 6-speed T56 Magnum/TR6060 is less than 130 lb...

Yeah it just drinks more gas/eats more brakes and tires/numbs the steering feeling/wheels are more prone to damage from potholes on our lovely streets...and the list goes on...

It's just the way it goes as of today's technological limitations: it's specs/weight/price choose two.

And that's such a hard decision to make, us poor poor 1st world people suffering so badly and stuff

No back seat the other day my wife and I were taking the FR-S out for dinner and along the way we dropped my 2 daughters at the beach with some friends. I'm 6'2, wife is 5'9, 14 year old daughter is 5'7, 12 year old daughter is a bit under 5', we all were belted and fit fine for the short trip. I sometimes call the FR-S the "clown car" lol. Let's see a miata or exige do that!

Yeah, but the manufacturers have been combatting and working around that for years. I think it's funny when a C5Z was brought up in a comparison against an 86 and being called too heavy.

A car like a 1le Camaro doesn't drive like its weight would suggest. Manufacturers have had to work around and add weight year after year for all sorts of compliances, I find it hard to believe they absolutely want to. They just have to.

There is also "consumer compliance" where the buying public will no longer purchase cars without certain features none of them dictated by regulation but all of them adding weight. It can be something as simple as cup holders (a cup holder weighs marginally more than a blank space or simple cover), or as complex and heavy as air conditioning.

It would be interesting to know how much weight could be removed from the average car if you could get a fully stripped down version that was still road legal.

They get around the weight problem by dialing up the power, stiffen up the suspension, using 20" rims with ultra low profile tires, which further increases the weight (more coolant, oil, beefed up suspension bits, heavier rims). Its a vicious spiral... more weight >> more power >> more weight>> more power to make up for the weight...
Despite all this, you feel that weight transfer when you corner or brake. Sorry to be absolutely blunt but the only way out of this is for manufacturers to tell the next buffoon looking for a sports car with 16 way heated and cooled seats with 12" Android Auto, Apple Carplay screen to take a hike because he has absolutely no idea what a sport car means.

I just dont see a 3600 hp mid engine car with a sorted suspension and drivetrain to be a boat I guess.
