I had an electrician 2 doors down growing up. Mr. Smith. Great guy. He and my Dad were good buddies. Both gone now.

When my parents did their addition in 1976 he did all the wiring and taught me how to do switches and a few other things. It has really come in handy over the years.

Oh, I agree. The point of the posting that caught my eye was don't wait too long to do the traveling. In my younger years, I've traveled through nine countries of Europe, Canada, Mexico and every state in the US (except Alaska).

However, now that I'm in my mid 70s, although I have the time and the money, I don't have the energy or ambition to travel all that much anymore. I'm glad I got some traveling in when I was younger -

Very common among pilots. You're a MUCH more experienced pilot than I'll probably ever be, but my flying got a lot better once I started sailing... and sailing came a bit more naturally to me than most I think in part because I had been flying for a while first. Lots of similarities. Differences, too, obviously... Enjoy! OH... another big similarity... you always have to fix stuff, and it keeps you from flying/sailing. Grrrrrrr...

I sailed extensively as a cadet. Just about every size and shape boat you can picture. Even sailed competitively for a couple of years. Depending on conditions it can range from adrenaline pumping exhilaration to mind numbing boredom. The wind disappears and you start moving at two feet an hour you soon start to wonder just why you bother. In a good stiff steady breeze you are on top of the world.

Luckily I get paid to travel for a living so I can do it while I'm young and not go broke either.

The Skipper was impressed with how fast I was picking it up. At the same time the rudder being opposite was constantly screwing with me. I was keeping that gangster lean though so I guess was doing something right. My first tack change was a little slow..

Exactly what I'm doing right now. I want to learn and this guy is happy to have a another deckhand. I have been looking into it though and really it's not much more expensive than golfing (alot). If you join a yacht club and do most of your own maintenance it can be done for amazingly cheap.

That's exactly how it was! We were able to launch right out of the mooring without the motor at all. For awhile we had it up to where we were both sitting on the high side for maximum speed. But there were a couple times during wind shifts that it just died out for 10 or 15 minutes and we kind just ate Pringles and played with the lines in futility. Also coming back on downwind was "wings out" for awhile. It's so chill though I mean even if it was no wind for 2 hours you could just nap down below deck. We did use the motor to park though (and charge the radio battery for a bit).

I've only sailed small single sheet boats. Apparently most of the people at my new company sail, and I'll be quite close to the water so hopefully I'll be able to do it more.
