Why is the limited trim so much more popular than premium?

First of all--calling the base trim premium shouldn't be allowed

Second--on the 'for sale' forums and just on used car listing, there are a whole lot more 'limited' trim than 'premium'. Besides push button start, dual zone AC, and leather seats what's in the limited trim you don't get in the base?

I love not having to take my keys out of my pocket to lock/unlock my car. That alone makes it worth the price.

Honestly, keyless access is the biggest reason Limited is the way to go, in my opinion. Besides the on-paper differences, the HVAC controls that are used for the Limited trim are nicer than the weird parts bin, RAV4 knobs that the Premiums get. Nothing particularly wrong with that, though the Limited just has a more cohesive look on the inside.

Also, 2017+ Limiteds unlock the option of adding the Performance Package.

Why are cars with options more desirable than base models?

That is literally the question you asked, and then answered yourself.

When they first came out the Premium had the same features as the FRS but cost more so people that wanted the base bought an FRS. Anybody that wanted more had to get the Limited so those numbers were higher. Doubt the mix is the same now that the 86 has comparable levels and actually costs more.

It's called the Premium because it's not a base model.
It's just the lowest trim model we get in the US. Other markets have one or two models that slot in below the Premium.

When I was shopping in late 2015 to early 2016, Subaru dealers were also more willing to negotiate than the Scion dealers, maybe because they didn't really want BRZ's and only knew how to sell a car for it's AWD. (I think Scion also had fixed prices?) But I also liked the keyless entry, nicer seat materials and padding, and fog lights, which didn't end up costing much more than the Scion once you talked them down.

I have the premium. I leased it on December 24th 2017 in the high $25,000 mark. They said it had a "$4,000 discount" The Limited was going for around $31,000. I missed out on Brembos, digital cluster and a/c control knobs

I got my Limited because of the heated alacantra seats, fog lights and better climate system. I thought the dual zone was dumb in a small car but it’s a nicer control unit. Puddle lights were nice too.

Fog lights turned out to be useless.

I didn’t care about keyless operation but it has really grown on me. I’m still ambivalent about the spoiler.

The limited does have more features but you pay a greater price for it. I am just surprised that significantly more people opted to buy the trim. Or maybe the salespeople are doing a great job pushing the more expensive model onto people.

I guess for me I prefer the simplicity of the premium trim. I've been in both and the controls look and feel equally cheap for both trims, so that's a moot point for me.

Many things..
1) smart key
2) dual zone auto climate control
3) 4 inch screen with lots of cool gadgets in the gauge cluster
4) better audio head unit with Navi, CarPlay etc
5) leather/ suede seats that are heated
6) option to get performance package
7) fog lights

The drambeenie risers really set off the stock spoiler. I've even had manager at Toyota compliment me on it while parked next to a TRD 86. He said he'd of liked that much better for the TRD 86.
