Besides incase you missed the info a base Camero is 300hp almost 30mpg rwd. Yeah what's not to like? Sure a V8 is better but I have a budget.

As stated in my build thread:

I went to school for car design from 2000-2004. In 2003, Toyota sponsored our senior thesis, and I proposed a modern day 86, which went over extremely well. (here's one of the original ideation sketches for my 86 proposal.)


In 2017, my dad was looking for a car to replace his 2004 Chrysler Crossfire 6-speed. I had recommended an 86 twin, and wanting to make sure his was special, he reserved a series.yellow BRZ when it was announced, and picked it up during the week of his 68th birthday. It was the first one sold in Wisconsin.
Since I'm a wheel designer, he picked up some Rotiform KPS (my design) as summer wheels, and installed them with Michelin Pilot Sports.


That October, I was planning a trip to Japan, and asked if he wanted to come along. I rented a new Toyota 86 while there, and after driving it to numerous touge around Japan, fell in love with it, and knew I had to get one.


I had a very comfortable budget to work with, so I wanted the best example of an 86 twin I could get. I purchased my Crystal black Silica tS one year and two weeks (February 2018) after my dad got his series.yellow. I got it in black to match the 86 I rented in Japan, so every time I looked at it, I'd remember the trip we went on together.

Come to the Toyota side and there are some similarities, although, my car has garnished a lot of attention from both sexes. I think it depends on colour and choice of cosmetic mods as well.

My car being black, almost always clean, having the new (better, best, most aggressive) front end, black wheels and dark tint, makes it out to be much more "luxury" looking than it actually is, especially at night.

I’m 47 years old. Married with a 8 year old son who loves cars. Since he was in preschool, he would ask me about engine sizes of various cars as we’d drive by or whatever.

I’m in the business of car/motorcycle import/export to Japan (mostly American cars and bikes), also been a hobbyist since the 80’s with MR2’s, Eclipse, and other random fun cars.

Then I got heavily into motorcycles, so I just drove trucks from the early 90’s until one day just last year.

My mom in Hawaii calls me and wants a Lexus CT200h (she didn’t like the new Lexus UX), and wants a CT in the most mint condition possible. So I find her a CT200h Special Edition FSport blah blah. Drove it around for a month before the ship left from Long Beach to Honolulu.

Got hooked on having a car. My kid loved it. Wanted me to get a car that’s in Forza Horizon 4.

Found a weirdo white collar accountant (who disliked meeting strangers from Craigslist) that had a pearl white 2014 BRZ with 46k miles, manual trans. Incredibly well kept oddity. He still had those federal regulation stickers on the driver’s window from the dealer, including plastic covers on parts of the interior from when the car was dealer new. He was the original owner.

Bought it. Now my kid is stoked, so am I.

All I do is take him to school, go to jiujitsu, and take my wife out once in awhile anyway. Still got my work truck. Need coil over kit and Rota RKR’s to fill my retro mid life crisis dreams.

I first saw the BRZ at a car show in 2013 when I went to specifically see the 2014 Forester. Bought the Forester. The thing that struck me about the BRZ was that it fit me like a glove. Funny thing, in 1989 when we bought the first of two Mazda MPVs, I tried out the MX5 Miata. It reminded me of the Lotus Elan that I had briefly. The similarity was no mistake on the part of Mazda. I never got a Miata; it is not a comfortable fit. I have driven a long string of mostly 50s and 60s British cars including Mini and worked as a mechanic at a dealer that sold both British cars and Datsun. I could see the end of the road for the British imports, but with the Datsun (Fairlady) 1600s, 2000s and the 240Z, the Japanese were taking up the slack. In my opinion, the 86/BRZ fits the niche that the 240Z held back in the day. Even the price point is similar when you adjust for inflation. However, technologically the Tobaru is superior in every way. Of all the cars I have driven, The Austin Healy Mk I Sprite (Bug Eye), Austin Mini Cooper (The real ones) and the Jaguar XKE 4.2 are my favorites just to drive. I felt that in the 70s, cars had lost their soul so I rode motorcycles and when the driving public was out to kill me, I changed up and tried to drown myself in fast boats. Now that I am older and the arthritis is reminding me of that fact, I have garage Feng Shui with a Subaru Ascent on one side and a Subaru BRZ on the other. The Ascent is for hauling people, stuff and any combination of the two. The BRZ is for my personal sanity. Despite all the shortcomings critics come up with, it is the best sports car I have ever owned at a throw-away price. I have a 2017 BRZ Limited Automatic and the only change was to fit Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires. I don't track the car and the 0-60 talk does not impress me one bit. Shift into manual mode and point the tach needle up a bit and the car can outrun most everything that has twice the power and twice the price tag, because other than a straight line, most people just can't handle that much mumbo in a car. Look at those YouTube fail videos for proof. For now, the BRZ is the right tool for the job, although I have to admit that the prospect of a Toyota Supra has my interest. By the way, a friend recently bought a Honda Si. He likes the car, but he is constantly second guessing his decision. I think he was sort of pushed into it by an influential friend of his. Go with your gut; if your 86/BRZ feels right for you, that is good enough and tune out all the noise. Here is another thing that you will remember years from now. There are cars that come and go. Most are forgotten and then there are certain cars that will be remembered and noted for one reason or another. You are driving a car that people will be talking about.

I bought mine because I hated having to outfit every car I bought with new struts/springs/sways/bushings/steering rack swaps/brakes/diff to get the combination that felt adequate to me.
It's an e36 to me that doesn't weigh 3300lbs and doesn't needs VANOS or window regulators replaced. It's a Miata to me that can be driven through a foot of snow. AND NO TIMING BELT

Did you come from BMW? I currently have a 128i that I've replaced the struts, springs, front sway, front control arms, and rear subframe bushings and still not happy with how it handles.

Strongly considering moving to a BRZ.

I came from several E36s and an E46 BMW, as well as a couple Miatas and a 3000GT VR4 and a WRX. I could not get any of them to handle how I liked, and I noticed that trend. No matter what I threw at the car, it just wasn't quite what I wanted. The newer BMWs feel far too compliant for me, so I haven't considered anything newer than 06 viable for what I like. Sounds like you have the same issue

I’m drawn to lightweight, RWD, Manual Transmission cars... so on the new car market that pretty much narrows it down to the Miata or 86/BRZ. The steering feel and factory suspension are superior in the BRZ compared to the Miata, so that sealed the deal for me. Having useable space and better seats was just icing on the cake.

It was probably the only Subaru I hadn't owned...they only had one in stock within a 400mile radius at the time, so I got it. Been very happy ever since. She's a hoot!

Yes, yes. Who wants to race the master!?!? Others have already made valid points , but to me given the price range / level of this car new/used, there isn't much out there in the same league.

Some positives :
*slick manual gearbox (only thing better is probably a 911/Cayman)
* exterior lighting
* fairly good efficiency given it's a 2L 4-banger , on the more aero side
* good versatility given it's a coupe (out performs most 2D coupes given it's space) junk in the trunk
*if driving 150-300 mile in one day it won't be uncomfortable while driving (getting in/out is another story)
* its COG /handling , steering-road feel / feedback from the steering wheel/chassis. Overall balance of the car.

Some negatives :
* uses 7.5 quarts of oil , for a 2L (it's due to the boxer design).
* Insurance maybe high, or on the higher side even if you have a perfect (no points) driving record and been with your insurance 5+ years.
