There's good and bad. Definitely slower, easier lives are available elsewhere. We're thinking of where we'd want to retire, and we've come up with staying in the current home 8 months of the year then leaving for the winter to someplace like Hawaii or Mexico. Partly it's because the micro-climate of our canyon is about 10 degrees colder than the surrounding area.

I wouldn't mind living in NYC, but the weather is only good for small parts of the year.

Where I live in the Atlanta suburbs we pretty much have what you describe in terms of culture, and relatively mild winters. I also have access to the mountains in 90 minutes, the beach in 3 to 5 hours (easy weekend trip) and if I get tired of the cold I can get to South Florida on a cheap flight or drive.

As far as NYC (or the other metro places you mention), well I guess I'm just not a city dude in general so it all holds less than zero attraction to me, particularly as a place to live.

I'll agree with @jsimon7777 (for a change - ). I lived in Danville, CA (back when it was a sleepy little town) for two years and within an hours drive of NYC (in CT) for seven years. I preferred Danville's climate and access to things to do.

Yea, but I would have spent @3,000,000 worth of my life in California traffic.

When I was house shopping, the least expensive thing I could find then that met my needs was already approaching $200K. That was within 45 minutes of work and had 2 bedrooms, when I really needed at least 3. The best I could find was a 1,000sqft row house near Berkeley. It looked like a single-wide trailer without the charm.

Oh, I reckon you were just a little late. In 1975, I bought this new house, within a 45 minute drive of Berkeley, for $66,000. As you can see, it sold in 2016 for $1.3 million.

I personally like the variety. When you get tired of the cold, summer is just around the corner. When you get tired of that, there's always winter in a few months.

I'd rather have 4 different seasons than one fire season.
