I agree. The S660 is a little too small and underpowered, but anything is possible.

Has Toyota ever worked with Honda? They partially own/invest in Subaru, Mazda and Yamaha. Toyota has worked with BMW currently, and I believe in the past, and they have worked with domestic companies. I believe they are rivals with Honda too much. Am I wrong?

Lexus competes head to head with BMW, sedans, coupes, SUVs, the F Sport cars definitely target someone who wants an M car but more comfort oriented, that didn't stop the Zupra.

A modest growth of the S660 chassis to meet safety standards, which would make it SFR sized, stick something in it that makes 100-130 HP from off the shelf and you have your sub 86 mr2 revival. No way are they going to build a mid engine car for under $25k any other way.

Grow it a little more, put in something over 200 HP, keep it light and you have something that lands between the 86 and Zupra. Probably more likely due to the reengineering required to get that chassis to pass US and EU safety standards.

Anything is possible, it just takes time and money.

According to Bob Hall, the entire Mazda product line at least in the past was in direct competition with Toyota.

Toyota also worked with Lotus in the early 80's, the MR2 was no coincidence imo.

The Subaru investment was forced upon Toyota by the Japanese gubment when GM wanted out. Didn't Nissan rescue Subaru in the late 80's after the Legacy project used up all the dough? It was like the Volvo 850 of Subaru.

I guess anything could happen, but somehow I could never see a Toyota + Honda collaboration. Toyota is part of the old guard of Japanese car makers. Honda was the NKOTB and the old guards like Nissan and Toyota initially tried to block Honda from entering the car market by lobbying the Japanese gubment IIRC.

The SF-R looks like a Daihatsu Copen variant more than anything.

The Internet's guide to building an SF-R

-Shrink TNGA to Yaris sized.
-Reverse orientation to get RWD.
-Use 1.2L Turbo from overseas small cars (add dynamic force 2.0 or 2.5L as upgrade engines)
-Get Yamaha to tune the engine and/or add high performance heads.
-Ensure weight is no more than 2400 lbs.
-2+2 with rear seat delete or strictly 2 seater if rear seat space proves to be useless (and not the "tall person has no rear seat space behind the driver in small car" exaggerated useless)
-Handling to match or exceed a Lotus Elise
-All amenities included (leather + heated/cooled seats, dual zone HVAC, info screen, apple carplay/android auto, power fold mirrors, led lights + fogs, etc)
-Sell for 15,000 or less.

Guaranteed to sell in droves, EASY to do (because all the parts are available),
Should be able to print money because my degree from MIT (Marketing from the Internet school of Technicalities) says this is a realistic and doable business plan.

Maybe a bit harsh but anyone who believed this had any chance of actually reaching production really only has themselves to blame.

Wasn't too far fetched to believe it at the time:
-Toyota was on record for saying they want three sports cars (three brothers) in their lineup.
-The 86/FRS had been released, the Supra was well on its way (mules and whatnot I think appeared around this time, so there was somewhat of a sports car revival momentum happening.
-The SF-R looked quite production ready for a concept, there wasn't really anything about it that looked like "no chance that element is making it to production"

All signs were pointing in the direction that this was the next/third brother sports car coming out. It was never confirmed though and as time went on and all the news about this car just disappeared, plus the slowing 86 sales, the "meh" reactions to the Supra for the most part....seemed like if it was ever close to being green lit, the market changed and it got shelved instead.

When I first heard rumors on the internet about Toyota making a legitimate successor to the ae86 I had my doubts. Doesn't mean I wasn't hopeful.

iirc, the internet felt the same way about the 86/frs/brz as well.
