I think that's somewhat arguable, but it also depends on the size and actual tattoo as well.

i'm an electrician as well, though i work mostly residential, with occasional commercial/industrial stuff.

there's a lot of stigma's around tattoo's. it's only in the last 10 years or so that 'non-badass' people started getting them for personal meanings. unfortunately, this means that many people find any visible tattoo a sign of being a big bad town-pillaging biker.

i worked with a guy for a few years that had tattoo's, mostly on his arms and legs. good worker, good customer etiquette , almost no problems with him as a person. there were notably 3 jobs(1 residential and 2 commercial) where we would leave for the day, and job lead would call the boss and request that he not to come back for various BS reasons---"i think he took my watch(we worked on the outside of an empty shed)", or "it makes the customers uneasy".

perceptions suck, but it's the reality we live in.

I, uh, went a different route.

I have a bunch of custom dental work that is visible when I want it to be and (relatively) invisible when I want it to be. I have to smile pretty hard or show it off deliberately. Although the last tooth I had done is a bit more forward (second bicuspid), so that is a bit more obvious.

I would not do a face tat. It's an excuse for people to marginalize you. You don't need to pile on. Give yourself a break and add to your body first.

This is something I’ve noticed, the jobs that care the most seem to be the entry level gigs. I know plenty of heavily inked, beard/hair to the chest, well paid equipment techs and programmers and even staff scientists. None of them have face tattoos but none hide their ink either, full sleeves sticking out from a polo isn’t uncommon.

My only thought is that once you’re in a specialized profession you sort of have proven that you aren’t “someone to be concerned about” (an addict, someone who hasn’t put their criminal past behind them, etc), but when you’re young and looking at entry level positions or only a few years in an industry you don’t have that proof yet. It’s wrong that people who are successful have less rules to follow, but it’s unfortunafely the way it is. I’m all for fighting the system but not in a way that might keep me from eating.

Definitely get a tattoo, but definitely don’t get it on your face. It’ll make life, and staying on the up and up, harder.

A lot of these entry jobs are also public facing, "corporate ambassador" type roles too. That impacts it.

Well most of the electricians I work with are roxy addicts so I wouldn’t say that’s completely true.

At my work there are positions where people make 30k a year to people making hundreds of K, at least 2000 employees maybe 3000 and pretty high turnover in the lower end of the range.

I'll just say I haven't seen anyone on the high end of the payscale with face/forearm/neck/hand tattoos

Not saying don't do it, just me sample size of 1 experience

My thing is I don’t necessarily want to work for someone for the rest of my life. At some point I would like to take my knowledge and the money and credit I’ve built up and finance my own company and build from there.
