15 years in this business, I've learned they don't write DTBs for fun. Takes a whole lot of repeat repairs before a published document comes out.
We have "secret stuff that no one can print or barely tell you over the phone", "Tech Topics" and then an actual "Bulletin". It takes time and lost dollars to hit the last step. |

The above item is an officially published document which clearly addressed spring orientation and ONLY spring orientation.
The very fact this is being released says techs are putting these springs in upside down. Heaven help us. |

And to add a bit of context, here is the headline from that article posted on "DRIVE": "Center for Auto Safety Demands Toyota, Subaru Stop Recalling FR-S, BRZ After Numerous Problems" |

Toyota document updated 3/27/19. Perusing now. Added everything I can find below. The video link won’t open for me.
Seems pretty clear Toyota is standing behind their procedure. The updates clearly put the failures on the work process and capability of the dealers. “It is the dealership’s responsibility to select technicians with the above certification level or greater to perform this recall repair. Carefully review your resources, the technician skill level, and ability before assigning technicians to this repair.“ Basically, get your shit together and do your job. The updates are all in here, however they are not in order and the documents aren’t labeled in any way. Open the last 8 or so, close the Subaru documents and put them back in order. At least the page numbers are labeled. https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/c...72&docType=RCL Starting here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...8V772-6639.pdf Two pages added. As well as a video and an “Added caution to cover Oil Pan opening during FIPG cleaning and to clean out blind bolt holes” “The repair quality of covered vehicles is extremely important to Toyota. All dealership technicians performing this recall are required to successfully complete the most current version of the E-Learning course “Safety Recall and Service Campaign Essentials”. To ensure that all vehicles have the repair performed correctly; technicians performing this recall repair are required to currently hold at least one of the following certification levels: • Expert Technician (Engine) • Master Technician • Master Diagnostic Technician It is the dealership’s responsibility to select technicians with the above certification level or greater to perform this recall repair. Carefully review your resources, the technician skill level, and ability before assigning technicians to this repair. It is important to consider technician days off and vacation schedules to ensure there are properly trained technicians available to perform this repair at all times.” “FIPG Sealant. P/N: 00295-1217H (150 g / package). Dealers can claim up to one tube per vehicle. However, one tube per vehicle should not be needed for actual repair. If one entire tube is being used per vehicle there is most likely over application occurring during the repair.” “It is recommended the vehicle be test driven before disassembly to confirm the engine operates as designed with no abnormalities (e.g. smoke from exhaust, engine noise, fluid leak(s), A/C system operation, etc.) Any issues or concerns found with the vehicle should be discussed with the customer BEFORE proceeding with the repair” Last edited by maslin; 03-30-2019 at 01:12 PM. |

That last section is a little bit disturbing. If there are shavings there is a fair chance that they have something to do with an oiling problem. While it is probably not related to the recall issue it should be considered as something going back to the original assembly of the engine. It would not have been noticed in regular oil changes the way most shops do them because the oil just drains into a 'can' of some sort and isn't inspected. Knowing the history of the engines that are part of this recall I would think that some special consideration ought to be given and the vehicle owner shouldn't be totally on the hook for parts that need to be replaced even if the car is out of warranty.

I feel for people who've had their engines blow, and obviously it's enough of a problem for service documents to be modified like we're seeing here, but this seems like the correct way to address the issue: The engine has a clean bill of health and spins a bearing post recall? That'll take the owner off the hook. The engine doesn't have a clean bill of health? Good idea to sit down with the owner before tearing it down and go ahead with the procedure in an informed manner, or maybe back out.

Found more. Subaru will trade you out of a BRZ for a discount on an ‘18 or ‘19.
Also this note in the dealer letter, on the Toyota side. That’s all the updates I can find within the last 6 weeks or so. The updates from 3/27 are significant, hopefully the failures after repair will fall off from this point on. |
