I paid less for the Toyota 0W20 not too long ago. Someone here had posted some test results a while back and that had the best shear characteristics and hit some other key numbers so I tried it. My car has been running very well and I hit 3 of my best gas mileage tanks in this period. Unfortunately I didn't get to do much very cold weather monitoring because the car sat for the bulk of the winter due to some health issues I had so I can't speak to it's near zero feel and performance but in the low 20's it was very good. For under $5/qt I will probably stick with it or maybe give that Amazon basics a try if I don't hear anything negative about it in summer temps as I'm less than 1k miles from the next change.

I'm sure there are several very good options!
MobilOne is factory fill on all Porsches, and since it's $25 at Walmart for the 0w40 European formula MobilOne jug, I feel like I can't go wrong there. My GSR has over 336,000 miles (200k put on by me) and I've always used MobilOne for that engine and it still has great compression. All my sports cars get tracked and this oil has never let me down. Anyone else ever do Blackstone oil analysis?

i mean, i expect it to perform just as well as any other oil, as the bottle is stamped to meet the same standards. i just, well, don't expect it to... no one ever said "i'll take the cheap steak, it's just as good as the high end steak..." i keep waiting to hear the other shoe on amazon/walmart oil. it just seems like a cheat code of some sort.

no i just switched to it and plan on run about 3500 miles and send it to blackstone and see. it meets the same standards as the rest of the oil and ive seen backyard garage reviews saying its just as good but well see. probably not worth the 10$ saved but i really wanted to see and i figured my car is low miles so its not hugely risky. |

You can find it on sale / rebate at Auto parts stores (major companies) for about $28 ish. I don't like Amazon much either.... ..big fish, eating smaller fishes, for snacks, so yearly I tend not to patronize.

You would think that the amount of deliberation owners spend on choosing motor oil that they were calculating what it takes to get a satellite into orbit. Maybe it is one of the few things that an owner can attend to and not get in over their heads. I wonder if brake fluid gets as much attention. How many owners on this forum have cars that are overdue for time and/or mileage. I recently polled nearly all my friends on that and got a unanimous, “Huh?” Check your manual. And by the way, don’t confuse the DOT types; like synthetic motor oil, there are various blends for different applications. My Sprinter’s turbo-diesel requires a very specific oil formulation for low ash, sulfur and volatility to protect the DPF and SCR. The only readily available and reasonably priced oil that meets the MB 229.51 or 229.52 specification is Valvoline Synpower MST. With 13+ quarts for a fill, that gets expensive and if you let the shop do it, grab your socks. Comparing Valvoline to the next popular choice, Mobile One, the spec sheet reveals some only minor differences, but both exceed Mercedes-Benz specifications. The oil required for the Subaru FA 2.0 engine is available from a wider variety of suppliers. Last time I used Mobile One because I was at Costco, the price was good... done. I did use an oil filter acquired from the Subaru shop. This same sort of discussion about the best oil filter never ends. Done.
Yet another explanation of oil types: https://auto.howstuffworks.com/synthetic-motor-oil2.htm |
