If they are really working on a 2nd gen you would have seen a test mule running around the Nurburgring by now.

Subaru probably also ran out of ideas on how to improve the current car. The purpose of the STI Sport may have been just to find a way to incorporate the improvements of the tS car onto the standard production line done at a lower cost.

Toyota and Subaru must have really used a lot of their best resources to come up with the initial car to begin with. That makes it harder to improve upon while maintaining a certain price point.

If a lower revving higher displacement engine is really a better thing, why would Subaru be still using the 8000rpm redline EJ20 Turbo setup in their JDM WRX STI. They must think it's always those dumb overweight mofos across the pond that complains about torque, so we must give them an extra 500cc to shut them up. Most of them YouTubers can only drives straight and doesn't even know how to downshift anyway.

From Japan with love.

A few things. A new generation doesn’t absolutely have to have a new chassis so running the ring in what looks just like a gen1 would be easy. Also a larger displacement doesn’t mean lower revving. There are large displacement V8s with higher redlines than the FA20. But that sort of comparing apples to oranges just like comparing an FA20 to a turbo EJ or an FA24 turbo from an SUV to an FA24 that’s NA targeted for a sports car.

I’m not convinced it would happen but I wouldn’t rule it out because there aren’t any mules.

Chevy ran a mid-engine Corvette test mule with a Holden ute body on it. I don't think you can make any assumptions just because a test mule didn't show up with a big sign floating over it saying, "New 86 Here!"

And conversely how many mules have run that track where a production car never saw the light of day? People place far to much importance on mules running at Nurburgring. Is it a good indication late in development? Sure. Is it the only test track they use? Not by a long shot.

I'd buy that! Chevy should bring that one to production.

I kind of feel like Chevy was trolling the automotive press with that thing. It's very weird looking. There's no way you show up at the track in that without it attracting attention and people wondering WTF you're up to. Test mules are sometimes disguised to avoid attention, but I think this one likely was made up that way to attract attention and drum up buzz instead.

Everyone and their mothers new GM has been working on a mid engine vette. I think development started back in the C5/C6 days.

Also it's not like GM has mid engine options in their current portfolio. So no matter what they grafted on there it would still look like a troll.

They have been "working" on a mid engine car since the late 50s. There have been a dozen of so prototypes produced over all those decades. They finality just have the tech to make it work the way they wanted at a price people will pay. Hell, I believe there was even a rotary prototype at one point in the 70s (could have been the 80s my memory is fuzzy from back then).

It was always a dream for Zora and pretty much every lead engineer following that the corvette go Mid engine. So yeah there are a ton of prototypes/concept cars floating around out there.

By "working on" I meant in its current iteration (GM green lighting the project).

Since mules and the ring were mentioned. I'm hoping the next gen BRZ doesn't stray far from what it is currently.

The desire to build a mid engine sports car was one of the reasons DeLorean left as the head of Chevy. We all know how that worked out though.

LOL
" we were intrigued by the sight of a prototype at the Nürburgring: just what is Subaru doing there with the BRZ"

Or it was some guy driving his modded car around the track. They do realize people mod cars right?

Carscoops is one of the very worst of the sites for making shit up based on the smallest thing.

@Tcoat I agree with you about the quality of that site.

That would be an excellent troll opportunity if I lived near the ring.
