I really never understood the need for 8 speeds and beyond (aside from gas mileage) if the car offers the option to shift manually. Like why can't I do multiple downshifts in one shot by pulling the paddle a few clicks like how I can with bicycle shifters.

DSGs are great but I would never own another one. Too many issues overtime.

And I grew up driving mostly 4 speed automatics to the point I want them to bring it back. It looks like the LC500h is the ticket once I can afford it.

Economy and emissions. You ever hear a 2 speed rev out before you get that one shift ?
The 2% of the population that will shift manually will not be aiming for mileage nor emissions goals tough.

You cannot compare a 4-speed old transmission with ZF 8HP. We are talking about one of the most advanced transmissions available today. For example, Hellcat and Demon also use this transmission among many others. Can you please read the following articles ... with an open mind?

Last September I spent a couple of days in the Gray Court SC facility where we build the 8HP and 9HP. One of the coolest plants I have ever been in and I have been in a pile of plants. They had a bunch of pictures of what they were used in and I was actually surprised at how many cars they equip. Between the two models they build over 1 1/4 MILLION trannys a year.

Everybody is of course free to like what they want. But, I am an engineer, and it irritates when such an advanced mechanical design is called just a "slushbox". Demon and Redeye are only available with these transmissions with 800 HP. They make 0-60 in 2.5 sec and some people here claim these transmissions slip! Yeah right

The only slipping transmission I know is mt of boosted 86.

I'm confused, are you saying you can't do that? I do that with my AT all the time, even when not driving in manual. I've even done a triple a couple of times.

I get the MT crowd's preferences but so many seem to think that every AT is the same as in a 1990 Corolla. This not even close to the truth. Modern performance transmissions are far from the slushbox of old. Even the real slushboxes of the past could be built to levels of performance that would meet or beat many an MT. My 70 Coronet street class drag car was a 3 speed Torqueflite and it had no issues at all. In fact they still use that same model tranny in many drag cars to this very day. The base Torqueflite was the very definition of a slushbox but the heavy duty ones with some modifications were beasts. If it could handle 600 lb-ft of torque back then the new trannys out now should be just fine.

You are doing that with your foot to accelerate. I mean by action of the left hand for engine braking.
