It's amazing dating a girl who is done school (well, shes upgrading from a diploma to a BScn) and is working nearly full-time and making nearly twice what I make. Crazy weird for me to not have to foot the bill for everything.
Imagine my shock when she told me she was paying for a trip for us during reading week that wasn't inside of this province and didn't need me to drive for any part of it, except to meet up with her to get to the airport! |

Unless you are showing up in rags and acting like a total hillbilly nobody at those functions has any clue as to what you do or your level of income. They can't possibly be judging you as they just wouldn't know. It is you judging yourself and reflecting that back on them.

spoiler alert. "What do you do?". there's not necessarily malice or anything associated with it. it's just one of those things you ask when you're trying to find something to talk about with a complete stranger. now I make a decent living and would be pretty comfortable on my own. these folks are all high level folks that are deep into the six figures. they all have families with stay at home moms and multiple kids. forget all my hangups about my job and how much I hate talking about it. what could I possibly have in common with these people? there are also these "retreats" the partners go on a couple of times a year. they all bring their wives and go to a beach, skiing or whatever for a long weekend. at some point all the wives leave their husbands so they can talk business. what am I going to do, go hang out by the pool with a bunch of housewives and talk about what little Timmy did the other day or even worse hear them complain about how lonely they are because their husband is always at work? I don't see that scenario being something that could in anyway have a positive end. then add on the fact that we are not married and you know people will be hitting me with that one all the time. it's bad enough now with her hassling me about it everyday on top of her/our friends and family. I'll just have to deflect it because when I tell people why not they get personally offended because they feel like it's an attack on them for being married which is not my intent. IMO, they get pissed because I'm right even though I always preface it by saying I mean no offense. basically I think it's pointless unless you are doing it for religious reasons and you want kids. seriously there's no reason to get the state involved in my relationship with a Best Friends Forever contract. another big reason is how badly my dad has gotten screwed on his 2 divorces. the more recent one(last year) being far worse. long story short he had to sell the house, our business and split all the cash. oh and btw my 62 year old dad still has to pay alimony even though the judge made him sell his business and sole source of income. so yeah I'm going to pass on that just so she can play princess for a day and be the center of attention for a few hours. /rant

If they all work at the same place and talk internal business then it doesn't matter what level you are at you will be left out. If not and it is just general talk then you can join in and just smile an nod a lot. The fact you are not married may bother you families but I highly doubt that her business associates give a single damn. I stand by my statement that they just don't care as much as you think they do and the problem is more in your head than theirs.

So you think you work for a decently sized company until you read just how many people GM is laying off, and how many they plan to lay off. Overall, they're going to fire almost as many people as the entire company I work for.
