Well during that time Toyota wasn't associated with "cool" (imo they were only successful with either utility or luxury) which might explain the drastic design change with the A80. Pretty sure nobody bought Toyota for their "handling". Besides, the younger folks couldn't even afford the Toyota premium, while the older folks with money usually bought German or Swedish.

I think Toyota has been going thru the same identity crisis in the last decade or so hence all these radical designs as of late.

I think it looks great today, however amongst it's peers I'd rank it behind the RX7 and NSX.
Meh half the stuff from Japan looked about the same through that period.

I like the looks of the A70 and I was OK with the looks of the A80. For some reason I always thought the A80 looked like it needed more tire. I never considered either of them a sports car like my 280Z was. I ended up owning an example of each in the mid to late 90s. My opinion of them did not change. They were both very nice cruisers but I felt that they were too softly sprung to be very sporty. Both were quick in a straight line and sounded great.

My favorite 90s Japanese car was the RX-7. That and the NSX are the only ones that I really considered a sports car. To this day, I still think it has the best looking bodywork ever put on a sports car. The Nissan and Mitsubishi were big overweight cars and not very sporting. I drove all of them except the NSX back in the 90s when I was looking to buy. I ended up with the A80 Supra but I only kept it for 6 months before moving on.

I guess because I actually experienced/owned those cars, I do not put them on a pedestal quite as high as some folks do. One caveat, I drove all these cars in stock or near stock form the way they came from the factories. Ironically, I never owned a RX-7. I came close a few times but things never quite worked out.

The term "sports car" has been so diluted in the last 30 years it has pretty much lost all meaning.

^^^true, but my God, compared to the sh*t that designers are pumping out today, makes that era look like the Pax Romana of car design.

The A70 was never something I liked. Any 80’s car was ehhh...the blan, boxy designs. Over the years I have grown to appreciate 80’s cars. The 90’s were overly bubbly. Even the MKIV’s I owned were a love hate relationship with the look. The headlights and front was ehh, but the rear and tails were great. I think the A90 with a new bumper and some new rims will be awesome.

This A70 is nice.

You say you do not like the A70 and then you post that photo and I am like "How could you not like that?"

Then you qualified it by admitting that one looks nice. LOL Yeah, that one looks great!

Honestly, I probably liked the looks of the A70 (like Gunmetal Gray) more than the A80 (Black) I owned as long as the headlights were down. At least from the front.

Yea that widebody is pretty nice, and like I said, the boxiness and blandness of the 80’s has grown on me. Especially the modified versions of cars, or special editions. Like the BMWs were ehh but the E30 M3’s with those fenders are hot now.
