A university by me owns a local police car. I've lived here long enough to figure it out now. They park it on random corners on campus. I guess it works because they been doing it for at least 10 years.

We have a local mattress place that bought old OPP and city police cars and slightly changed the markings. They park one or the other out front of the store all the time. Even though I know what they are I still slow down going past because what if it isn't one of their scam cars? It does draw attention to them but not sure how good a marketing tool it is since it just pisses people off when they realize. If, they realize I guess.

That's why I have a radar detector. Are they really shooting though?

Radar detectors are illegal here. You have to spot the old fashioned way.

What do they do if you are American crossing in on vacation and have one and they see it? Do they let you put it in the trunk?

From what I've read, if they are plugged in and you are caught with it, there is a fine and they confiscate it. Sounds like you would need to put it in the trunk before crossing the border or leave it at home.

This is pretty similar to the states where they are illegal in the US (Virginia and at least one other that slips my mind at the moment)

If you have one at all it will be confiscated and you will be fined. Even if not hooked up and in the trunk. Now of course they would need to have a reason to search the trunk so make sure there are no wires dangling by your windshield. There are big mothering signs warning about them at all border crossings and even if there weren't ignorance of a law is never a defense. They have a zero tolerance rule about detectors here since the sole purpose they serve is to circumvent the law. You get caught they will follow the full process.

Virginia and DC specifically. Virginia because they like money, DC for other reasons, and they like money.

It is ironic that detectors only exist so people can speed and not get a ticket because they also like money.
